Yeah, the marines will have a battery of 155's.Originally posted by Drake Tungsten
Is there even an artillery in the area? I think the Marines would've called it in if they had it...
Air strikes are more precise and less likely to cause collateral casualties.
The range depends on both the gun, and the type of surface it has to operate from. Range can go up to about 24-25 miles. One big difference is that the explosive payload of a 155 shell is around 45 lbs or so (the whole shell is about 70), so it takes a few, especially in a building, to make sure you get people out.
Large bombs have more of an effect than an equivalent amount of 155's coming in over time.

At least 15 kilometers. How far beyond that do you think the average ground pounders venture?Originally posted by Asher
Don't patronize me, I know about that -- I want figures.
How many miles are they still accurate. I want to know if a 155 can take out a semi-large warehouse building nearly as well as a 2000lbs precision bomb, too.
How well does artillery take out a target? Ask the poor sods on the Somme, or Verdun, or... consider that artillery killed more than any other arm in all wars of the modern era.(\__/)

And btw, I think that most victims of shelling would dispute you.

Um...you seem to forget about the troops which are right next to it.Originally posted by Dissident
and there are no civilians around. so there is no reason not to shell.
save the expensive laser and gps guided bombs for populated areas. Use artillery in unpopulated areas such as this.
