"Jingo" was a word associated with medieval conjurers and showman. It meant "By magic", used in a show like "hey presto!". It was thought to be a substitute word for "By Jesus" i.e. a non blasphemous exclamation or fr emphasis - i.e. "I'll do it by jingo!" I've heard it used like that, particularly by older Australians.

Very interesting. It's good to see something useful come out of this troll...

Yes, there was a time when the British thought that way too - the Empire on which the Sun would never set
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

We don't need to worry about the setting sun. We have superior night vision gear.

Its not a phenomenon confined to one country. Ordinary Chinese people got very bellicose when their embassy in Belgrade got hit with a cruise missile.

I wouldn't blame increased Chinese nationalism on the Belgrade embassy incident. The leaders of China are deliberately stoking the fires of nationalism in order to provide an ideology to hold the country together now that communism has been abandoned.

So, what's it called when you think a country other than your's is the best?

I'm not blaming it on that either Drake.

There's just a very ugly "my country right or wrong" mood abroad. And its depressing to watch the youngsters take it up.

I'm not looking forward to 5 or 10 or 20 years of this sh*t. I actually remember the Cold War. We had 10 good years and now all the old stupidity is coming back.

Sadly, the only cure for jingoism once it takes hold seems to be a large loss of life.

Why did you automatically assume I was refering to America?

Neither am I. East Asia, in particular, is going to be a tinderbox because of it...

I am sure the Aussies will get upset too if one of their embassies got hit by cruise missiles. Mind you, it wasn't just one.

Got worse when the lame "outdated map" excuse came out.
