How about the FARC Uprisings? That revolution is still ongoing.

I think US involvement in cuba would be perfect for this sort of paper. Little do most people know that America wanted to overthrow Castro before there was any hint of a "Soviet connection". Citing reasons that Castro had gotten too big for his britches and that Cuba would prove a "dangerous example to other Latin american countries" And keep in mind, this is all before they knew Castro was a commie.
It is also during this period that the USA wanted Mexico's help to invade Cuba. The Mexican foriegn minster had a pretty interesting quote. He said that "I would love to help you, but if I tried to convince the Mexican public that Cuba was a threat, I would have a million Mexicans die laughing". A quote especially ironic today, when Cuba is considered a charter member of the"Axis of Evil".
Anyway, the USA has been trying to get it's hands on Cuba since John Adams, who said that Cuba will eventually fall into America's hands due to the laws of political gravity. And of course, tiny Cuba has proved to be a nuisance for the mighty USA since then. I really think this would be a great topic for you.

monkspider - absolutely. American intervention is always tempting (believe me ), but as it is a class dealing with Latin America, I'd much rather keep the US out of it as much as possible. I have papers in my portfolio that already emphasize knowledge of US history, European History, Ancient History, and Russia/Soviet History, so I'd like to stick with something that concentrates primarily on Cuba internally.

Orange, last I checked Cuba had not only the best standard of living of any Latin American country, but of any third world country, including Taiwan.

What about Haiti? It has had a pretty hectic history this past century. You could focus on Operation Deschoukay where Baby Doc Duvalier was booted out.

monkspider - i couldn't remember if it was best or second best in Latin America. I thought Argentina was better. I've never heard best in the third world though. I have reservations believing that...
