Bush & Blair aren't getting their UN warrant.

Damage control in action. Blair is making himself a loophole.

It seems pretty clear to me that Bush is going to bend over backwards to give Blair the resolution he needs. No harm in giving it a week or two.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Both Bush and Blair need a face saving way out of this nightmare. They've overplayed their hands considerably. There's just too much money at stake for France, Germany and Russia to go along with a war.

All Bush is really upset about is that when the UN finally does turn on the oil spiggot, the Iraqis will reward France, Germany and Russia with all the contracts to rebuild their petroleum infrastructure. Bush's oil buddies won't get a penny.

If Saddam had any brains, he'd "find" a couple dozen missiles, blow them up in front of the UN inspectors and then execute some stooge in the military for disobeying his orders to comply fully with the UN mandate. If he had a lot of brains, he'd prop up some puppet and then officially resign his position. Unfortunately, he's even more of an egomaniac than Bush.

Why does Bush need a way to save face on this one? He has his predicates lined up just fine.

If Bush forces a vote but can't even get the 9 votes to pass it will be a diplomatic embarassment of epic proportions.

Indeed. Bush is about to transform himself from the leader of the free world to the laughingstock of the entire world.

Diplomacy is a game for professionals and Bush right now looks like a rank amateur.

A good article that outlines the essence of what is going on:

Freedom is just unawareness of being manipulated.

Now it is even more clear that going to the UN was a mistake. Some war talk before attacking does help: it makes the attacker look less evil. But when war talk goes on for too long, it unnecessarily unnerves people, and the effect changes sign: from positive to negative. Add to that all the dirty methods (deception, bullying, bribing) the US government has been using to make its case through the UN, and it becomes no wonder that the cause of war is now in such a setback.

The hawks were right. Colin Powell was wrong. And he already paid for that personally: he damaged his personal credibility and ridiculed himself by delivering that BS speech at the UNSC.

Well, his main thesis was that Saddam was not cooperating and I think he did in fact prove that. Even Blixy Boy had to admit that Saddam wasn't all the cooperative. The other stuff about the terrorist link is tenuous at best, however it is naive to believe that Saddam plays no role international terrorism.

Blix reminds me of the beltway bandit consultants that thrive in the Washington DC area - a man who provides expensive professional services miraculously concludes that what you need is more of his services. Amazing!
