I can see the argument for Britain, but much less so for France or Germany, seeing their current positions on the Iraq issue.

Yes, but they were imperialist at one time. As was the US. By your definition of the US, France and Germany are still imperialist.

The US was not out to gain territory in those wars. The US gained something more valuable, from the standpoint of the interventionists - influence throughout the world, and, following WW2, the position as the (at first) only and (later) strongest superpower.
    Influence isn't imperialism.

    ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

The only real problem with David is that he is stuck in the late 1700s. The America in his mind has long since faded from history. It would be nice if somehow the clock could be turned back and all would be simple again. almost non existent armed forces, local supremacy and such. Virgin territory with almost no local competition. Only savage indians to subdue. Only caring about ones own home and not concerend with enemy troops in the next state. That America started disppering nearly as soon as the ink was dry on the constitution.

Of course he takes full advantage of all the things that a modern goverment offers and has no problem when he gets something. But there will be hell to pay if you ask him to actually contribute to anything. The kind of person that is probably better of by himself. At least thats the way he comes across in his post.

Well you certainly stepped into a steaming pile there, Sprayber.

I might have been a little melodramatic.

I won't edit it. I'm sure some will get their knickers in a twist over it though.
