Since these idiots use(d) it as a conduit, I wouldn't be surprised. The biggest wild card of all is the Pakistani government - it's intel services and military are full of people playing one side, the other, both, or fully selectable at will. So once these guys made contact with al Jazeera, I'm sure a lot of assets were looking for movement - Predators tracking cars, looking for patterns of email traffic, watching certain suspects.

You wouldn't have to penetrate al Jazeera per se, but just have a lot of assets ready to move fast on any hard info. What I'm finding more and more interesting is what amateurs these guys apparently are. I mean, we are applying a lot of resources, but several high level people have been taken alive (bad procedure #1), with lots of accessible info on them (bad procedure #2), and in the same areas (bad procedure #3). Apparently, they just don't know the meaning of "lie low" or the concept of information security.

It makes the idea that these clowns could have pulled off 9/11 even more amazing to me.

I'm sure they could have come up with some kind of small boat somewhere, and gotten their asses out of country and more scattered around, but apparently, despite several people getting nailed, they're overconfident enough to stick around, and do stupid, useless stuff like murdering Daniel Pearl, which just pisses off the Pakistani government for no gain.

Yep.

Cynically, one could say it was timed for political gain, but another angle is that a lot of al Qaeda's communications ability are in the toilet. Some people would have wised up to his capture over time, some would know immediately, but have a hard time communicating to everyone.

So after getting what's immediately useful, without any publicity, you then make an announcement, turning on the lights to see where the cockroaches scurry, so to speak. Most al Qaeda types over here probably get their fastest info from the regular news, not their own messed up communications channels.

It also happens to create a positive spin for Pakistan, right at the time we're helping bury any publicity over the fact that the Pakistani air force just murdered the Afghan Miniter of Mines & Industry, four more Afghan officials, and a US citizen working for the Afghan government. So everything ends up warm and fuzzy from every angle.
