  • Oerdin is moving to Sacramento

Yep, that's right folks your dear fellow polytubby Oerdin is going to be moving from So. Cal. to Nor. Cal.. It's kind of weird because just yesterday I accepted a job in Irvine (southern California) which I'm supposed to start tomorrow morning at, but, this afternoon I got a call from a company I had interviewed with in Sacramento (northern California) which offered me 15% more. That's not a huge amount but it’s nothing to sneeze about either.

The big thing is I've only been to Sacramento about three times in my life and one of them was for about 6 hours so I could fly in for the interview and then fly out. Is anyone here familiar with the Sacramento area? Where are the nice places to live (are there any)? Besides going to Sacramento Kings games what else is there to do? I know Sacramento is only about 1.5 hours from San Francisco so I'm sure if I get really bored I could always head to the bay area on the weekends.

Anyone's help or advice would be helpful so I'm looking forward to hearing from you all.

I'm alittle worried about the weather since Sacramento is in land you don't get those cool moderating ocean breezes. After all I'm currently living in a place where the forcast is warm and sunny year round. I spoke with my parents and they tell me its nice to live in a place were you can see the seasons change and I have to admite that sounds like an interesting proposition.

    What do you folks think?

It's also not far from Reno (read: gambling).

I forgot about that; gambling & skiing in the Lake Tahoe area will be close at hand. That sounds like a great weekend just waiting to happen. I'm starting to get excited here fellows.

I was there yesterday and it looked like a really nice town even if it was a bit quite and the kind of place where everyone has two kids, a dog, and a minivan. On the up side though I noticed that housing prices are about 40% of what they are on the coast. You can buy a huge house for like $220,000 where as you couldn't buy an apartment for that much in San Diego and I'm sure San Fransisco is even worse.

It seems strange to me that you would move for only 15% more money, but I think that Sac is a little easier on rent (and housing prices). I don't know that much about Sac, but I live in Fresno. It gets hot in Sac, but not as hot as Fresno. I think you may see highs of 100 degrees in the summer, but not too often. Like Fresno, you are close to many goodies. Nice mountains, SF, Reno.

51% female population makes the odds favorable for a horny little white boy like myself. I'm used to living in San Diego where the large number of naver and marine corp bases make the population 2/3 male. It will be nice to be out numbered by ladies even if it is by a small margin.

I'm counting on the cost of living be a lot cheaper then in San Diego so that maybe, just maybe I'll be able to buy a house in a year or two. The other big reason is the company in Sacramento is a large national firm with around 6,000 employees and the company in Irvine is a small firm with only about 25 employees. I like the intamacy of working for small firms but the last company I worked for was small and it ran into finacial difficulties and layed off 25% of the work force just four months after I started. I'm now thinking a large stable company is the way to go.

hehe, I think you are right about the small companies especially in this economy.

Well, I guess I will now become a cog in the multinational capitalist machine.

You live in Fresno, Duncan? Nice town - I once gave a presentation there (to Valley Yellow Pages) and enjoyed my couple of days.

Thank you John. It would be much better if the air quality were better.
