DinoD- There are certain policies that are not in the best interests of the EU, and if these childish Eastern Europeans want to pursue such a policies, they do so at their risk. Chirac has every right to not want such nations in the EU. Imagine if Puerto Rico was being considered as the next US state, but then out of nowhere it's leaders started talking about holding Nazi sympathies. Do you think American leaders would welcome them with open arms?

Even the EU members themselves have yet to work out a coherent position on this matter. So I ask again, probably in vain, how have they acted to the detriment of the EU?

DinoD- They are pursuing a reckless and belligerent policy of being pro-military adventurism. That is something to be frowned upon under nearly all circumstances.

Argh, they aren't out yet I expect the French FM to minimize the thing as much as possible. Our diplomats aren't rednecks, unlike our prez (with so many similarities, I wonder why Bush and Chirac don't get along better ? )

But what harm can these remarks do? It is not as if the candidates are in position to threaten France.

A warning shot was in order. In this case, one has to agree with Chirac.

France is more than a few years late when it comes to being against military adventurism (Kosovo, etc.).

The 3 new EU members who declared they are pro-US (out of the 10) are still a bit impressionable by the US

                    They came around already

BTW out of 3, one (the Chech) PM said he was not expressing the official view of his country, just his personal view

80% of Europe is against the war

The candidates will have a role in defining the future of the EU, and will probably contribute more to the EU army than to the EU economy (when an EU army will exist). They can threaten France in the meaning they'll have a weight in the Union's decision making.
I guess the force demonstration between France-Germany and the former underdogs (Britain-Italy-Spain) isn't finished yet. The candidate countries would better keep clear of the incoming mess.

Italy has Berlusconi. Not worth even considering. He changes opinions as fast as the Italians change governemnts

Interesting to note that in Rome and London (and Madrid?) the demos were really massive (talking about hundrends of thousands of people)
Italy has the largest left wing electorate in Europe.

Not if they get vetoed. Which could happen, if they behave *TOO* silly.

I don't agree with the war but talk about talking before thinking. For all the talk of American impiralism by the French it seems that France's only real concern is the fact that its not the one superpower.

                                Pantaloon :
you got it pretty well. The French-German couple is acting within the EU about as arrogantly as the US in the world. Since Chirac is as subtle as Rumsfeld, he made his annoyance clear towards the candidate countries. He really hated to encounter such an opposition to his views.
