Take the initial story and multiply it by about 50, and you have the repeating saga of my college years. This didn't happen when I was drunk btw, when drunk I was usually guaranteed to get laid, or get into a fight. Sometimes both. But picking up the signals from a nice girl in any other setting was seemingly impossible. I finally started to try and figure out why I was such a loser at love, and as I went through all of these scenarios in my head the dull thump of the obvious hitting home happened again and again. Fortunately I made up for some lost time in the years since.

Recently I have been in a serious relationship, and not "on the make". Nonetheless I do get the occasional signals. I am interested by habit, but for the last 6 years I've been able to remain true to my relationship. Today was interesting. I started off by happily making love to my girlfriend. Later on I went out to do some errands, and it seemed like every woman I came across was very friendly. I got a haircut and was practically mauled by the lady doing the cutting, who managed simultaneously to share a large number of her personal problems with me, and give me a decent haircut to boot. A woman at work was very friendly and touchy feely. Even the young women who work at the grocery store went out of their way to get me to pay attention to them. And of course it did me no more good than an ego boost, which will probably last no longer than a day or two.

So you young guys should pay attention. If these women are desperate enough to flirt with a 40 year old guy like me, imagine what they are willing to do for young intelligent studs such as yourselves. The key is to get beyond your attachment to any particular result. In most cases getting a result is most important, because it tells you whether you are wasting your time and energy or not. If you are, then you can move along to more prosperous endeavors. If not, the sooner you are out of the blind nervous part of the relationship, the better.
