  • Anti-Aircraft Units stationed around DC

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Military vehicles with anti-aircraft missiles have been deployed around Washington, and fighter jet patrols over the nation's capital and New York have been increased as a result of the elevated threat of terrorist attack, Pentagon officials told CNN on Tuesday.

It's the first deployment of "Avenger" air-defense systems since September, when Humvees outfitted with ground-to-air Stinger missiles were deployed with Sentinel radars around the Pentagon and other military installations. The "Avenger" is a portable, short-range air-defense system mounted on a Humvee that can rapidly fire eight Stinger missiles.

The steps come as security across the nation is being raised. On Friday, President Bush's Homeland Security Council raised the national threat level from yellow to orange. Orange indicates a "high" risk of terrorist attack, and yellow indicates an "elevated" risk.

In addition, patrols by fighter aircraft that have been in place for months over Washington and New York have been stepped up as a precaution, officials said. Also in response to the heightened alert, the U.S. Customs Service has increased its Black Hawk helicopter surveillance patrols over Washington.

As of last month, the helicopters typically flew between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Officials tell CNN that the patrols are now being conducted around the clock.

The level was raised in part because of a high amount of "chatter" being intercepted by intelligence agencies.

All 425 military bases in the United States have increased security levels from Threat Condition Alpha to Threat Condition Bravo. The Pentagon remains at a still-higher state of alert, Threat Condition Charlie.

So... America is allowed Anti-Aircraft units to shoot down planes which are attempting to kill innocent people, but Iraq isn't? Where's the fairness in that?

EDIT: Added in smiley for sarcasm effect.

Well, with the upcoming war and the fact that He Who Must Not be Named (the real-life Voldemort) is still out there, what do you expect?

The question is, whether they alert status will be raise to Condition Red, or the "Sh1t in your pants" stage, as most people would call it.

Troops Posted at Heathrow for Muslim Festival

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain drafted hundreds of troops into Heathrow airport and other key sites around London Tuesday as a precaution against possible al Qaeda attacks during the Muslim Eid festival.

Police said the measure was precautionary and designed to coincide with the end of the festival being celebrated in mosques across Britain and the world this week.

Eid al-Adha, the three-day Muslim celebration of the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage, started Tuesday.

"From time to time, it is necessary to raise levels of security activity," the Metropolitan police said in a statement. "We think it is prudent to do so now."

"The current strengthening of security is precautionary and is related to action being taken in other countries and the possibility that the end of the religious festival of Eid may erroneously be used by al Qaeda and associated networks to mount attacks."

They said heightened security would be most visible at London's biggest airport, Heathrow, and was connected to "a potential threat to the capital."

The use of troops to support police is not unusual in Britain and was used for years in Northern Ireland to deal with the threat from Irish Republican Army (news - web sites) guerrillas.

But this is the first time the army has been posted at Heathrow since 1994, when the IRA tried to launch a mortar attack on the airport.

British police do not habitually carry arms.

Some 450 troops were guarding the airport, with other soldiers working alongside police in central London.

Heathrow managing director, Mick Temple, called for passengers' understanding.

"We would ask passengers to continue to be vigilant and patient in the light of any delays caused by these or any other additional security measures..," he said.

Those passing through the airport Tuesday morning welcomed the appearance of tanks and armored cars on the approach to the passenger terminals.

"At first I felt quite threatened when I saw the soldiers but it does make me feel safer knowing they are here," said Marguerite Withers, 66, flying to Dubai to visit her son.

"It is just sad that all this is necessary, that we have to have all this security."

Russell Steingolb, a 39-year-old New Yorker traveling to Paris, said: "When I saw the tanks pull up my first reaction was that this is a sign of war but as a passenger it does make me feel safer, absolutely.

Britain's support for Washington's war on terror, allied to its hawkish stance on Iraq, has raised fears that the country might be targeted by Islamic extremists.

Earlier Tuesday, police confirmed they had arrested a 25-year-old North African man under terror legislation after he arrived in London on a Eurostar train from France last Thursday.

I said both want to protect civilians by shooting down planes which can kill civilians. However, the US has killed people in Iraq, regardless of what it says about the no-fly zones. I want to see proof before I believe Washington's sorties in the No-Fly zones are just.

However, Washington can stick anti-aircraft units in it's city, and for all we know they could fire a missile at an innocent plane.

Sure, the US can fly around in Iraq, bombing random targets and saying that Iraq's Anti-Aircraft policy is in violation of the UN resolution, but as soon as they get information of a possible terrorist attack in the US, they get all scared, stick anti-aircraft weapons in their cities and if they get the slightest hint a plane has been hijacked, whether it's a dodgy signal or whatever, they fire missiles and could hit anything.

I knew we would get a stupid leftist post finding a way to attack America based on defensive manuevers. Thanks Frozzy

And if you really do think our planes Iraq have attempting to kill innocent people as their mission, you really have gone off the deep end.

Oerdin, see the above post. I think it's pretty stupid if anyone actually would think that, and if they did they can't have been watching the news lately.

I could say the same about various other world leaders. Unless you're gonna argue that our President is a positive influence around the world who enjoys a lot of support.
