Leo Di Caprio himself has not been nominated! That's a scandal! "Catch me if you can" has not been mentioned at all!

"Sure, FOTR was better, but TTT was still leaps and bounds above any of the other **** Hollywood put out last year, including and especially Star Wars."
Open your mind - there's more than just star wars and the two towers out there! Great movies like 8 women, adaptation, chicago, talk to her, and such! I am personally rooting for a Chicago win for best picture.

monolith94, I despised Chicago. Reading the reviews, there are plenty of others like me.

My wife saw Talk to Her. I haven't. She couldn't say enough about it. It is remarkable that Spain did not submit this film as its entry this year.

Gangs of New York is a truly impressive film. So is Pianist.

I also really liked Road to Perdition, Insomnia, When We Were Soldiers and Signs.

Decent books, but doesn't make it automatically into good movies.
OK, LOTR is a GREAT trilogy, come on now

Honestly, I haven't and don't intend to see any of those - they just don't look very good to me.

Actually, Catch Me If You Can got nominations for best supporting actor (Christopher Walken)and best music score (John Williams).
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

oh c'mon folks! Do you really think the BEST movie gets the best movie oscar. I thought Titanic showed quite clearly that it doesnt have anything to do with the overall quality of the movie. At least not any more....

Rotten Tomatoes is a good site. Check out their page for Spirited Away:

                      125 good, 2 bad.

I would love to see this movie win. I can't really comment on the rest of the categories.

I can't believe Road to Perdition got nominated in the Music category. That's the worst film music I've ever heard, bar none.

This is how I see the fight for the golden statue (I'm merely stating the chances, not my personal favorites)

Best picture - Chicago and Gangs are the strongest competitors. The others have no chances, but The Hours could be a surprise.

Best actor - Daniel Day-Lewis will probably win, despite Jack Nicholson's strong position. But Jack won a few years ago, I don't think he'll manage to win this time.

Best actress - Now we have a tough fight. Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger and Julianne Moore are all strong competitors, but I'd bet that the Oscar goes to Nicole.

Best supporting actor - Ed Harris is always there, and he never wins... could this be his opportunity? Personally, I'd say Chris Cooper will get it, but Christopher Walken is also strong.

Best supporting actress - Kathy Bates. Meryl has her chances, of course, but she has been nominated so many times that it's easy to dismiss her. But the Academy loves surprises in this category, so Queen Latifah could be the surprise of this edition.

Best Director - Almodovar is there clearly as a small revenge of the members of the Academy. No one has understanded why Spain did not appoint his movie to be candidate for best foreign language film. The Academy seems to be saying: "hey, we would have chosen his picture if you had appointed it, you morons!". But the Oscar will probably go to Scorsese, he owns it more than the others, and not specifically for Gangs, but for his past work. The Academy loves these kind of late acknowlegement.

Original screenplay - Aha. This could be the surprise. Almodovar misses the best director award but Talk to Her gets best original screenplay.

Adapted screenplay - Chicago or Adaptation. I'd say Chicago.

Animated feature film - No, Spirited Away will not win. Hollywood doesn't like to give a nod to films that got awards in foreign movie festivals (with rare exceptions). We actually have a dispute between traditional animation (Lilo & Stitch) and digital animation (Ice Age). The one with more hype (and sales) will get the Oscar.

Foreign language film - Hero or The Man Without a Past. The others are there merely to fill in the list.

The technical categories are always tough to predict, so I'll end here. But I think that TTT will win for best visual effects.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

Eh... it's totally overrated. Good, but not great.

My biggest complaint is the lack of the movies "8 Women" and "Metropolis".
I agree about lotr - Imran.

Bearing in mind that almost none of the major nominees have made it to Turkey, here's just one quicky pick:

                                Best Director - Scorsese

Why? Because when they could have offered it to him in 80, they gave it to Redford instead (for "Ordinary People"). And when they could have offered it to him in 90, they gave it to Kevin f*cking Costner. The absence if an Oscar in the hands of the man routinely (and accurately) described as our greatest living film maker is a travesty, and one Oscar will correct this year.
