IF America had a rigid caste system
IF there was no way to work one's way up
IF America's elite gave the poor no social programs
THEN America would be a cold-hearted and ruthless culture, but all three of those stand.

That doesn't mean there isn't more room for improvement though.

Of course one could improve it, by one's personal efforts. And America is not a vicious and merciless dictatorship of capitalists over the sweat and blood of the proletariat.
