  • Polls are stupid in this case. Since when do issue's of national security require majority approval? Wars are not driven by polls (atleast they shouldnt) or be prevented by them.

Care to explain why Saudi Arabia isn't the target then ? They are the most active at financing terrorism and radical islamism, while Iraq remained wordly until very recently, and spent its money in traditional warfare rather than terrorism.

The purpose of the war with Iraq is to establish that nations cannot sponsor terrorism without facing direct confrontation with the US military. It's about establishing a deterrant. Now Bush can't come out and say that of course.

Saddam, in addition to his many other sins, sponsors terror by providing rewards for the families of Palestinian suicide bombers. That, and the 9/11 attacks is really all that was needed to convince the Bush administration to remove Saddam. The rest of the talk is just window dressing.
        aw come on...
        the US sponsored
        - saddam against iran
        - the taliban against the soviets
        - central american dictators
        - and so on.

that's a lot worse than giving some dozen young men money for blowing themselves up.

damnit... you americans should get the proportions right. you can't blame someone for something where your leaders are no different.

and when will you get it, that 9/11 had NOTHING to do with saddam. the majority of the planes were saudis and jemenites, osama leader is a saudi. the cell organised themselves in germany and the US.
saddam may be a liar, a murderer and a war criminal but he did not have anything to do with the attacks.

        • Did Powell's speech turn the tide so much ? I've read here the opposition to war in the US (strong and weak) was the majority in the US some weeks ago.

They weren't telling the truth. Don't think there has been a poll below 50% support for military action to remove Hussein for at least a decade, and the lowest support for military action to remove Hussein lately has been 57%. See question 7.

There is no such thing as unbiased news. The news in Europe ar as much anti-war as the news in the US are bloodthirsty.

DanS : very interesting link, thank you.

            • I changed my mind about the war when I found out that they were planning on dropping Patriot Act II on us as soon as the war started. This news didn't really make the headlines, but it was on PBS and the back pages of some newspapers.

I wonder if this will make an overall difference on war support in the States. Not that it will matter much. The US has never mobilized troops like that and not used them.

Iraq has apparently some illegal missiles. They go 9 miles over the allowed range, whether it's with or without payload I don't know.
This is being touted by some as material breach, but the fact is that it was Iraq itself that informed the inspectors of the missiles.
So, if the above is true, Iraq might finally start cooperating properly, assuming that the US doesn't start playing games (I really hope they won't).

                • According to the Israeli Channel one, Syria, Lebanon and the Hezbollah signed a secret agreement not to attack Israel during the war with Iraq in order to avoid an Israeli retaliation.

                    • The question is, why has Iraq waited so long?

Why wasn't this reported in the report they have given in November?

Just because they give the inspectors a cookie, doesn't mean they are cooperating.

                      • That's really reaching for an excuse Siro. So what should Saddam do now, when both withholding and surrendering information on weapons programs are punishable by war?

                        • Jaako : the whole point of the war is not Iraq disarming, even if it will be a side effect. The warmongering logic has begun, and it will not be stopped until its purpose is fulfilled.
The only way to avoid war would be for the American public opinion to be strongly against it. But we won't see this anytime soon.
