Incidentally, did you notice that Tony Halme is going for parliament? I'm going to laugh my ass off if that joker gets there.

Actually, I think Jaakko may have a point. I heard a story about two huge black-suit Teosto "agents" raiding Turkish pizza restaurants in downtown Espoo. They were looking for radios and TVs. Upon leaving they left a huge pile of official-looking forms and said that the owners had two days to "fill 'em up and start paying". They spoke Finnish and the forms were in Finnish also. It was too bad for them if they didn't understand it. Not complying with the orders would lead to unpleasant consequences...

Okay, I made that up, but it's almost true, I assure you.

what's wrong with us? I mean if people raise their voice loud enough, it's going to be heard. In other countries people demonstrate.. here?.. maybe you get 50 people to join after massive PR and they're just there to get drunk. We have nobody but ourselves to blame.

The weather in Finland sucks. Who want to march in the streets when its -10 degrees?

This all comes about because "public performance" of records is prohibited. Tells you on the back of every CD. Essentially, that means that if a group of people listened to a single hi-fi together they would have to pay a royalty fee. I believe the "public performance" thing should be scrapped. How long before we have to first buy the record and then pay every time we play it?

Last I checked it was -28C. A good evening for a grand demonstration. It's not even cold yet!

Well.. I don't care, it's not cold enough to get drunk, so it's not cold enough to protest!
Besides, We did make plans about taking Espoo under our military rule.. .

It's just that people don't care. They complain all the time, but when it's time to join forces, they just 'oh bachelor is on tv' and vanish.

It seems that Finnish equivalents of American RIAA, Teosto, which represents songwriters and publishers, and Gramex, which represents music producers and artists, want to force Finnish day nurseries to pay royalties every time nursery staff sings along with kids.
You don't have your facts straight. I just had a look at the Teosto web site. It's US equivalent is ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) not the RIAA. This is a body that collects royalties from various sources that make a profit from playing music. Those royalties are placed in a fund and individual artists recieve a small royalty every time one of theire songs gets played on any media.

Every country has it's own version of this scheme. Here in Canada, I'm a member of SOCAN. So if I write a song that gets played on the radio, everytime it's aired, I will get a small royalty for it. The money collected does not go to multi-million dollar music businesses, which is represented by the RIAA, but goes to the individual artists that are trying to earn a living from their music.

However, I do think hitting nurseries for these royalty payments is pushing things to far. They should only be collected from businesses that actually use music in order to make a profit from it.

PS I just had a look at the Gramex site. That's more like the equivalent of the RIAA, though it sounds like they still play a similar role as Teosto.

Willem, I'm sure that if you use their website as a source, even RIAA looks like a harmless group of little angels just doing their morally right work in a most ethical way.
