i "cancelled" aol when i got DSL, stopped using it and everything

4 months later a bill comes for 100+ dollars

once you're in, you can never get out

we ultimately had to cancel the credit card account so they couldn't charge us

They are decidedly bad business practice. I am surprised that there isn't an equivalent to a 'credit rating' system for businesses that repeatedly offend like this...if they abuse their privelege then banks should refuse to carry out standing orders on their behalf without direct authorisation of the account holder on every transaction. Would make sense, and it would certainly stop the buggers.

Ahhh, but then that would mean more work for the banks....

CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL. They continue to charge you, they only *say* that they will stop charging you after your 'free trial' ends. Basically, they tell you 'for being such a good customer, we'll continue to let you use AOL for 2 months and then we'll shut down your service'

Then they keep charging you. It's utter bull****. Cancel now, don't take no for an answer. If you can sign on, they haven't cancelled you.
THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO! I got a year free with my computer, and i thoutt it was made pretty clear that when one year is up, my service would end. for six months after the first year was up i was still getting AOL service. I thought i was getting it for free. as they said they would terminate at the end of my trial period... HAH! I accumulated like 150 bucks in charges... those bastards.

Don't take no crap, tell them you want it cancelling and you want it cancelling now. The British have a reputation for being soft when complaining, but I don't think many would take this kind of crap.

here is what happened to me

my internet provider went dead for like a week and i had an AOL disk that i installed on my computer giving me a free month, but when i signed up i found out that the only dial up number was long distance, so i called and canceled my service with them, but they said that they would give me another free month to change my mind, i said don't bother your dial up number is long distance, and my normal will be back up so go ahead and drop me, and they said to call back and cancel again at the end of my second free month, so the second month comes around and they charge me for it eventhough it is supposed to be free
i called them back, and was quite adamant that they had charged me for their service even though i didn't use it, despite i had already told them to cancel the service, and worse yet that the second month was free...they said ok we'll stop billing you
next month they billed me again!
i was on the phone for like an hour *****ing and yelling, but something finally must have sunk in after i was shuffled around to like 10 different customer service representatives, because after that they didn't bill me anymore

but serious i used their serive like 5 minutes on the first day and that's all, and i had like the 1000 hours/first month free deal, and i didn't log back on or use it anymore after that, and that was before i called and canceled

AOL - the dark side is strong with them
