  • Please do NOT use underlining for emphasis

Please don't, because it confuses the heck out of people: on the Web, URL's are indicated by an underline. You can still use boldface, italics, or capital letters to emphasis.

    Thank you for your consideration.

I don't see the problem; URL's are a different color anyway.

I would have thought that an emperor could tell the difference between an underline and a link . In any case, I refuse to bow down to your demands. I like underlines better than bold and will continue to (occasionally) use them.

Underlining is also used for book titles, as the MLA Style Guide recommends.

True. I'm just scoring points off UR's use of the word "all."

Even though I agree - underlining is irritating on the web.

Some other source recommends italics for book names and "quotes" for articles.

True, but as Jacob Nielson pointed out, the entire Web is one big experience, not individual websites. It's not that bad here, but on SDMB - man, it is maddening.

The MLA is the definitive source for scholarly work on literature-related subjects. The APA style is preferred by social scientists. Real scientists use any style they feel like.

Perhaps I am. As they say, Who Has Seen the Wind? Only during The Tempest would that be possible.
