My point? "The Core" sounds like it aims to entertain
    And it'll fail miserably.

This can't be dumber than XXX, the movie in which the bad guys release a solar-powered submarine to roam the world's seas...in land-locked Prague. The submarine, by the way, is unmanned and depends for the success of its terrorist mission on total stealth...but nevertheless has a built-in automatic voice mechanism that counts down the time to firing its missles, very loudly.
It still isn't as funny as Zardoz, but I'm not sure which is dumber...

Starship Troopers were also terrible. One National Guardmen said that his company could wipe out all those "advanced" mobile infantry in the movie within 15 minutes.

I haven't read the books, but wasn't it the exiled army from that one kingdom. You know what I'm talking about.

It was the Rohan army that Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas had encountered earlier (the one that slaughtered the orcs who had taken Merry and Pippin).

Yeah, but was it that way in the book? The evil wizard who panics?

Sauron is The Eye over in Mordor. Saruman is Christopher Lee, who does pretty much nothing in the book as the Ents sack Isengard, bless their wooden hearts.

Sauron is the Lord of the Ring, the one the ring is trying to get back to. Saruman is his henchmen/lackey who was trying for a bit of his own glory... oopsie.

Hey, waittaminute here! Is JohnT trying to tell us he hasn't read... Lord of the Rings?

                  Something Geeky this way Rants

You know, that would've pissed me off had I read the books. A wizard who doesn't help his troops.

I was also thinking that when Gandalf showed up and his army attacked, that he was improperly positioned - anybody who has played CRPG's knows enough to put your big guys up front and your spellcasters in the back. Duh!

I've got about 70 pages left. Slow going in Fellowship, but it really picks up after that...

Well, to be fair, in both the book and movie there are very, very few troops (if any) left in Isengard when the Ents come to whoop a little deforesting-polluter ass. He probably realizes that it's hopeless.

                            Sauron is back in Morrrrrrdor!
Anyways, if you completely ignore the ridiculousness of "the earth's core has stopped spinning", this doesn't look like a terrible movie to me. The trailer was kind of exciting, and the acting that I saw wasn't too bad.
And why wouldn't aliens use macos in independence day??? You don't expect a measly os like windows could take them out, do you???

But if your spellcaster is essentially a 20th level demigod, it doesn't matter. Gandalf kicks ass in combat, too.
