It depends about what kind of justice system we are talking about. Ideally, I support capital punishment, and in certain cases perhaps corporal punishment. The problem is in separating the guilty from the innocent.

I think we have to be very careful to distinguish what is done as a result of simple evilness on the part of someone and those actions which result from a mental disorder.
Just my 2c."Love the earth and sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown . . . reexamine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency" - Walt Whitman

On a slight aside, I've noticed how monetary costs seem to be entering the equation into a lot more things nowadays than it ever did in the past. There are some things, I believe, that are required for a just society to function, and one of those is a justice system that doesn't have blood on its hands. There can't be blood on its hands when death and torture aren't options for meting out justice, but just about everything else is.
Pie in the sky? Perhaps.

light corporal punishment (ex. 10 lashings for breaking and entering)I know this is controversial, but it is my belief, that if one is punished in this way, he WILL learn his lesson. However, it would be so opposed do to fears of it being abused or being cruel and unsual, that I probably wont ever even bother to support it if such a system is proposed.
capital punishmentand
. The idea is good, but corruption, racism, etc has created misuse in the past (making it bad).
community serviceThe arguements that are against it for the sake that it takes jobs away, maybe in other countries, but not really in the US. Community service is generally very menial labor that few if any otehrs would do, such as picking up garbage along public streets and in parks (just examples). It is for the communities benifits, adn it is the least criminals can do to give back after taking so, so much...
I also think prisoners should farm and raise a lot of their own food too, or do somethn to pay for their meals )at least partially). I dont like it how some of society's worst get all meals payed for, while all us good citizens have to work to put food on the table.
Imprisonmentmixed feelings. Some people can be rehibilitated in this environment, yet it proves just to be a forum for crroks to make connections and learn new ideas for others. Its also really expensive. But for now, I suppose its the best we can do as far as making everyone happy.

Why?
Because the trials for Capital punishments take much longer and go through much more instances than the trials for people sentenced for life.
It isn´t unusual for death candidates to spend 20-30 years in Prison until they are executed.
And even though the trials for death candidates are executed with much more care, there are still many known cases where Innocents have been executed.
Had those Innocents "just" been sentenced for life they would have been set free and had been able to go on with their lifes, but because they were already dead, the posthume rehabilitation was of no use to themTamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. As if 20 years of intense appeals wont prove one's innocence, I dont see how 40-60 years of sitting around would make too much more of a difference.
Though, dont get me wrong. The execution of innocent victims of the system is very concerning. I only hope with technology and changes to the system will only make it more reliable."I bet Ikarus eats his own spunk..."

Now, what have I chosen?
All kinds of sentences, from short sentences to being locked away for your life.
Also those kinds of torturing which don´t leave any signs, fines and even public display on the mast of shame.
I didn´t choose all kinds of torturing which leave marks on your body and Amputations, Capital Punishments, Raping and leaving the person to the mob.
Although it sounds justified in certain cases, when someone for example raped me or attacked me and thereby cut one of my limbs away to say "Eye for an eye" and cut the same limb away from the other person or for example punish him by forcing him to become a prostitue if he raped someone, there is always the danger that you sometimes punish innocent persons and therefore breaking a person who has never done anyone any harm.Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. Kramerman, yes, I feel the same about tortues/lashings also.
Proteus_MST - I am not sure what situation is in other states about costs and durations of the trials for capital punishments, but in Lithuania when such punishments were legal it was no longer and no more expensive than any other courts. Just if person was proven guilty on such crime on which capital sentence applies he was executed (he had right to ask president for help but in most cases he refused). Life sentence is now considered equal to former capital sentences (so people who formerly got capital sentence but weren't executed because of abolishment of capital sentences, now has life sentences), thus triel time or cost doesn't differs.
Kramerman, probably public works are good in USA but in Lithuania BTW unemployment is over 10% and many people has no jobs at all and they are happy if they gets any job, including collecting trash for minimum wage. Although for prisoners state doesn't has to pay wages thus they would be cheaper workforce, I think it is better to employ willing to work people and give them some money...

Does amputating include "drawing and quartering" ?Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.
