Ah, KF...one of our competitors...
We couldn't help you, we're very specialized, and not in the fields you need.
typical recruiter. Dismissing me outright. Maybe I could hang in those other fields. I swing a lot of different ways. I have some primo names on the resume too. Well...one. What type of stuff do you do? IT?
You might consider dropping the "Objective" section. When I read resumes I ignore it. "Objectives" all sound pretty much the same, so they do nothing to set you apart from other candidates.

In the back of my head, I was thinking about doing some bench science. I thought it was really cool when you advised me to do that. The corp strategy stuff can be a little bit of a souldrain. Making a better molecule gives you some satisfaction.
Well, AS, I think that alot of HR people have found it helpful when they have to screen a couple of different specific positions, that way it helps them figure out which job they are reading the resume for.
That's the only reason I put it on there, for identification purposes, though I agree that some of them can sound very fluffy.
"Seeking a challenging position that maximizes my skill set."
That's one of those, "No sh1t Sherlock!" objectives that I would ignore

So will you really feel like Dilbert's boss when you're bossing scientists around?

Ask them if they can solve it with Maple...
I can come up to speed as needed. (Within reason.) And I think my skill is more in asking the right questions to get a tangible feel for stuff and to size up costs and opporunities and scope of things. More like, "how many bounces required to translate 50% of photon energy? And how long does that take." Heck...i don't mind asking a dumb question like can they MAPLE it. At least it is better than the idgets who don't even try to understand it.

Is function resume considered a dodge? I thought it generally is considered so, but I read somewhere that it is the one favoured by IT sectors.

What if this runs over half a page? As for the LAN/WAN bit, should I make it more detailed (such as LAN/WAN: server clusters, TCP/IP, IPsec, network security, Internet connectivity, etc.)?

In my opinion I would say so, but it's also a little confusing to read as well.
But the cool thing about the chonological resume is that you can still show functionality, and/or problems that you have solved, within your job decription and bullet points anyway.

Sorry, I am not too sure what you affirmed - that functional resumes are considered dodges, or that they are supposedly favoured by the IT sector?
