        You know what doc. Never mind pissing around walking through forests and 'tactical simulations', if I was in there, it would be full of hardcore sex, menage a trois and lots of other naughty things. I'd be constantly tired

          I'm not an expert on Star Trek science but...

          I think that replicators require raw materials which contain the elements needed for the replicated product. For example, food is easy to replicate because the replicator only has to rearrange organic molecules (hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon) to produce an approximation of whatever it is that you want for dinner.

          But things like dilithium crystals, gold jewelry, and latinum bars cannot be produced with replicators because they are made of scare elements.
