  • UN says Iraq violated sanctions

Hans Blix has said that Iraq violated UN sanctions by importing illegal missile engines and not cooperating with UN inspectors wanting to meet with Iraqi scientists.

Is this the justification the US needs to depose Saddam?

I was unaware that the US felt it needed any further justification. They've been spouting off for a while that Iraq has been defying the UN for 11 years, so why would they care about anything that happens now?

It's always nice to be proven right. I'm sure international backing will be appreciated as well.

Did the US need any justification in the first place?

i'd like to see this settled peacefully or with UN backing.

My condolances to the people of Iraq
I have discovered that China and Spain are really one and the same country, and it's only ignorance that leads people to believe they are two seperate nations. If you don't belive me try writing 'Spain' and you'll end up writing 'China'."

I don't think many people doubted that Iraq was violating UN resolutions. I think it more that those violations aren't necessarily seen as being sufficient to cause a massive invasion. Look at how many other countries have violated UN resolutions.

If everybody already knew that Iraq was violating UN sanctions, then what was the point of the inspectors?

The inspectors were sent back in because many people and states claimed that Iraq had not violated the UN sanctions. They have now been proven wrong, which is important for American hopes for UN backing of regime change in Iraq. The US wants a Security Resolution authorizing force and proof of Iraqi violations of UN sanctions will help the US get that.

I think Saddam will end up giving in at the end and cooperating with the UN inspectors. I don't think he will risk a war that could let him be deposed.

There's a rumor floating about that Saddam may go into exile in Algeria with his two sons, but I haven't seen any real proof of this.

I think Saddam would prefer living in luxury as the ruler of Iraq though. It just doesn't make sense for him to risk war. And I don't see why Algeria would want to make itself an international pariah.
