University connections aren't all they're cracked up to be.
The connection to the university network may be 10BaseT (10 Mbits/sec) but the university's internet connection certainly doesn't support 10Mbits/sec per use. Far less.

If I did the conversion right, it's about 29 USD for me, monthly, and I pay that for a cable modem.
Note that before I was on a modem, and prices would be above 100 USD every month, because Internet here is damn expensive with modems, especially because you have per-minute fee from BOTH the ISP and phone company.

Pay nothing.
But then, I work for an ISP and get dial-up connection for free.
Live in the middle of nowhere, so cable and DSL are not available; too many tall trees block wireless; and satellite is too expensive for the limited amount of time I'm online.

I pay around 28.7 $USD, shared with 3 people.
I'm on 1500k down, 256k up, 8Gb limit.
Telecommunication in Australia is still expensive, but thats what you get when your entire country's telecommunications were run by a monopoly. It is getting better though.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).
I used to pay $34 and $10 for cable modem rental. then I realied what a waste that was and bought my cable modem. But they have since raised my monthly rate to $39.95 a month .
At the present I'm on dialup, but only because it is free when I connect to my school. If I had to pay, I'd get Cable, which would be $42.99/mo.
