I know what you're looking for. Something mellow but with some heart to it. When you've had a couple beers and a full belly and are just hanging. I'd recommend andy 70's soul.

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix (preferably Woodstock too)
Manic Depression - Jimi Hendrix
Great King Rat, My Fairy King, White Queen, Tie Your Mother Down, Stone Cold Crazy etc. all by Queen
Good stuff!
I finally got the first Queen album on CD. I had it on vinyl from 1974 or 1975. I loved it, but none of my friends had heard of the band until "Killer Queen" hit the airwaves.

and might I recommend Deep Purple- no not smoke on the water. That is overplayed. Songs like fireball and child in time (well that is a ballad- so that doesn't rock).
Blue Oyster Cult has a few weird ones as well. They aren't like your typical classic rock band. They have their own unique style. They aren't for everyone.
BOC! I like Cities on Flame, Godzilla, Don't Fear the Reaper ("Still reap around here, eh Mr. Death?").

That album definitely rocks. I played it until the cassette stretched and broke. Then I sticky taped the cassette together again. Always played at high volume. Very much the same vibe as "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You."
That is good stuff.

As for Led Zep:
Stay away from anything after Houses of the Holy album. If you're looking for songs that "rock", try LZ 1,2 and 4 first. Then see how far hooked you are before getting 3, SongRemainsSame and Houses of Holy. By this stage, these last three will probably become your favourites. I don't really recommend Presence, Phys Graffiti or Coda.
I can see that you and I (and I'm sure countless others) have undergone the same process. I only rarely listen to 1,2,4 anymore. LZ 3 is by far my favorite, though I like House of the Holy and Physical Graffitti alright.

Brand New Cadillac and I Fought the Law: The Clash, these versions will rock your face off.
Rage Against the Machine have a lot of good hard rocking songs.
I don't like political rock, especially when it is mediocre musically. Neither band had much of an impact on me really. Obviously many feel differently.

Frank Zappa: One Size Fits All - the entire album rocks, but especially Pajama People and San Bernadino. Joe's Garage rocks hard too.
Now you're talking! There are so many great Zappa records. I don't know how many times we listened to Joe's Garage in college, but Ibet any one of my friends from that time can still sing all of the songs. Moon was a fantastic contributor to those albums as "Mary". A couple of my favorite hard rocking Zappa tunes are "I Don't Even Care", and "The Illinois Enema Bandit" (from Live in New York, with Don Pardo introducing it).

David Bowie: Width of a Circle. Albums: Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and more recently Outside and Earthling
I like Bowie's rock days, "Rebel, Rebel", "Gene / Genie" (which sounds a lot like the Yardbirds) etc., but I like his stoned days even more.

Butthole Surfers: PSY, Hairway to Steven and many more.
"Electric Larryland", "Locust Abortion Technician" and some of the obscure (but still alive somewhere in my vinyl collection) early stuff is good too, but some an acquired taste to be sure.

Yes: Fragile, Close to the Edge and The Yes Album. The Bill Bruford days are especially good.
My three faves for exactly the same reason. Bruford added so much to that band, but people tend to neglect the drummer, especially in a band like that with so much talent.

Hammerfall - Heeding the call
Moonspell - Ataegina
Cannibal Corpse - I will kill you
Insane Clown Posse - **** the world
Iggy Pop - Lust for life
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Rammstein - Rammstein, Du hast, Sehnsucht, Ich will, Engel and Links, 2, 3, 4

actually I do like the one Atari Teenage Riot song they did with Slayer on the Spawn soundtrack. Good soundtrack.
As for some 80's tunes that rock.
Try Pat Benatar- Hell is for Children. Yeah she's kind of pop, but her old stuff rocks out. It's amazing this song cause controversy with religous leaders. They didn't even bother to learn what the song is about. Also Heartbreaker by her is another one of her's that really rocks. Also Joan Jett- I love rock and roll. It's a bit overplayed so you may be tired of that one.
