Are You Ready for some Football - Playoffs Week One
There was a third option for Matt Allen... Fall on the ball, be touched down by the diving Niners defenders trying to block the kick (don't laugh, you try coming to a stop in mid-air) and using that last time out of theirs.

And guess what, the situation got even more interesting...
I just heard from a coworker who's been listening to sports radio up here that the NFL is saying the refs blew the last play in the Giants/49ers game big time... Rich Seubert, the man who Matt Allen tried to throw the ball to, had lined up as an eligible receiver on that play and was interfered with as he tried to catch the ball, so there should have been offsetting penalties (the penalty called against the Giants was on a different player, not Seubert) and the Giants should have had another crack at the winning field goal.
Well, there goes any chance Fassel was going to get the hook... and here comes another offseason of a team and its fans screaming bloody murder about how it got screwed by the refs...

I hope some of you remember my earlier posts, where I said he alwyas finds a new stupid way to lose, that only a boob would have happen to him.
Here it is again.
The Giamts have two of the better young cover corners in the NFC, Allen and Petterson.
Instead of putting one or both on Owens in man all game, Fassel played zone, the niners smartly moved Owens into the slot reciver spot, so the Giants number THREE corner or a LB had to cover, and that is Seahorn, a fading overated player.
Third down after third down, there was Owens catching the ball and making the down.
Fassel did NOTHING to adjust to this.
Nothing.
Rabbit, the Giants had worse coaches in my lifetime, Reeves, Handley, McVey, quite a list.
That means nothing, the Giants will NEVER win with Fassel.
Yesterday showed why, even with the best offense in the playoffs the Giants ever had, he couldn't protect a 24 point lead for 18 minutes.
The man is a horrible coach.
I do say congrats to frisco, Garcia has guts and talent, and deserves to move on.
Owens is a punk, the league needs to get on him, and Shocky also, this strutting "in your face" stuff has to stop.
Whatever happened to sportsmanship?

And to think, the Niners SHOULD be at home right now.
I do not see the G-Men in the playoffs at all without Fassell stepping in and taking over play calling this year.
His main fault is that he let his team get out of control on him yesterday. He has had this happen to him before.
But if you fire him, who ya gonna hire?
P.S. On Mark Bulger: I hope the Rams keep him, and I really doubt that leaking that info to the public had any other purpose than to scare off suitors that aren't serious.
You could tell me I'm better off with Ol Jim, 7 years now, and we see the Giants losing their cool in the play-offs, and mistakes in the special teams, the EXACT same problems Fassel had in his FIRST year, when he blew a big lead to the Vikings.
Fassel is amazing, if there is a way to screw up, he will find it.

"Woulda, shoulda, coulda. I'd have done the same thing again,'' Okeafor said. "I wasn't going to let him catch it, score and be over then. I was at least going to make them use another play, give us another chance.''
The NFL's official statement Monday regarding the final play of the 49ers' 39-38 playoff victory over the Giants on Sunday:
A videotape review by NFL Director of Officiating Mike Pereira of the final play -- the Giants' 41-yard field goal attempt with six seconds remaining -- determined the following:
Tam Hopkins, No. 65, of the Giants lined up as the left guard and was illegally downfield on the pass attempt. The three flags thrown on this play were for this penalty.
Guard Rich Seubert, No. 69, was an eligible receiver on Giants field-goal attempts. This was reported to the officiating crew prior to the game as is routinely done before every game.
49ers defensive end Chike Okeafor interfered with Seubert downfield when he was attempting to catch Giants holder Matt Allen's pass. This defensive pass-interference penalty against the 49ers was not called.
If defensive pass interference had been called, there would have been offsetting penalties (ineligible receiver against the Giants and pass interference against the 49ers) with the down replayed at the original line of scrimmage, the San Francisco 23-yard line. Although time had expired, a game cannot end with offsetting penalties. Thus, the game would have been extended by one untimed down.
One additional note on the play: Allen did not have the option of spiking the ball to stop the clock, which only can be done by taking a hand-to-hand snap directly from the center. If Allen had spiked the ball, it would have been a penalty for intentionally grounding the ball and the game would have ended due to a 10-second runoff of the clock

Good to see that all the commentators and post game analysts on TV know their Football rules.
