  • Are rappers the only musicians who write their lyrics?

I always knew pop stars and rnb singers didn't write their songs but I always assumed rockers wrote the music and lyrics but from some references in other threads, it seems that they don't...

so are rappers the only ones who usually and are expected to write their own lyrics? Of course, rappers generally don't have to worry about the music, leaving that to producers, but rappers almost always write their lyrics with the exception of a few rappers such as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg who also have to deal with production for many artists in Dre's case, as well as managing record labels in both of theirs cases so they don't got time to write lyrics... most rappers write their own songs... what's with that? High school drop-outs can write lyrics while rich rockers can not?

I wasn't aware that babies come out of the womb being rich rock stars.

Rockers are suburban... enough said... (except maybe a few who came from trailer parks and what not but those would probably become country singers if anything)

this thread should be closed for utter stupidity. I'm reporting this...

P.S. rockers aren't suburban for the most part. And most do write their own lyrics. Usually the singer writes the lyrics. And the band writes the music. Although some band members don't get much of a say.

but do your typical rock band actually write their lyrics? why don't they? those lyrics seem very simplistic... same with pop singers... why can't Nsync write their songs? I mean they all go like... I'll always love you... I'll always be true... easy **** to write

I agree with you on pop music. but you do need to listen to more rock music.

P.S. U2 is mostly pop anyways

Well most bands do, all of the bands I listen to do, except when doing a cover perhaps but that's a different story altogether. I would imagine alot of the artists/bands on MTV don't write their own lyrics.

speer, is it me, or are 95% of your threads about some the generic characterization of a group, any group?

Personally I think the whole, "performers have to write their own music to be considered 'legit' " thing is pretty stupid. Back in the 60s, most music was written by professional writers in these big music houses. You would often see several groups performing the same tune. It was common for a black group to put out a solid hit and then when us whities got ahold of it, we would rip it off and have a more acceptable white group put out the song.

The entire American music scene has been built off of ripping off black music but hey that's another thread.

Anyway, I think Bob Dylan is one of the most overrated musicians ever, but he is often credited with being the one to reverse the trend and make it acceptable for a performer to write his own lyrics.

I think there are some great performers out there that don't write their own music and that just makes them that much better. I see alot of groups and performers come up through the ranks, being guided by some great hands, but then when they start writing and producing their own stuff, it turns into utter crap.

MarkG! I havent seen you in a long ass minute... how's Macedonia? it was in the news for a while a year or two ago about genocide or something... what happened to that?

anyway, fine... let's pretend I never mentioned rockers and instead... why don't pop singers write their simple lyrics?

                          thanks

because pop stars have very little creativity. They just have enough talent to perform.

you know, the Macedonia joke on me is long before very, very old. you'll have to improvise....

so you're saying that have made some study on pop singers and found that you can generalize saying that they dont write their lyrics?

i think i have a single pop album in my collection. it's shakira and she writes most of her own songs. my survey shows other things from what you're saying....
