Many Latinamerican countries have significant socioeconomic stratification between their European heritage citizens and mestizo and indigenous citizens, but this reflects rural / urban divides at least as much, if not more than, race.
I am ignorant of this area but from what I have seen so far, as a generalization the really light skinned Spanish make up the high upper class, the Indian/Spanish mixed population makes up a middle but poor class, and then there is the Indian lower class that gets **** on and discriminated by everybody. I am thinking along the lines of Bolivia here. The stratifications seem to be even more pronounced there, it almost seemed to be like old the East Indian caste system, not that extreme but still it was striking how the Spanish guys were acting like "Lords."
