Tuomerehu, I think Pekka was trying to make a joke. There's no need to get offended.

Nah, he's not really offended, he just dislikes me period. That's ok though.. anyway seriously if you're thinking about working in the EU, it should be fairly easy..
not much of a help, but I can't think of anything really hard that could come to your way.

Yeah, I called the British consulate's office in L.A. yesterday and they told me I should be able to get a British Passport. So EU here I come! The only problem is they told me it will take 3-6 months to process the paper work. At that speed I'll already have a new job here in the U.S.

That long? .. well if you come to work here in EU, your salary is going to drop dramatically anyway .
I'm sure you could work under some temporary permits or something? Others can help you more, I don't know these things since I already live in EU.. Good Luck!

Yep. That's how long it takes to get a new passport issues even if you've lived in the UK all your life. My passport renewal this year took less than a month, though.

If your Geology expertise is such that you could work in a University you might want to consider it. That way you wouldn't be limited to the UK to find a job because many of the Scandinavian countries should have a high proportion of English speaking staff/students at their Uni's.

Takes that long for citizens? What's wrong with you? . I got my last passport issued to me, and it took 2 days.

Unfortunately, I only have a Bachleor's degree so I doubt I could get even a meanial position at a University.

So I guess it is the U.K. or Ireland. Does anyone have any suggestions about a good place to settle for a year or two? I figure I'll work a couple of years in Europe and then move back to the states.

To be fair to our valiant civil servants: I believe they tell you to allow several months for the application to be processed ... which doesn't necessarily mean it will take that long.

                    The obvious stuff:

The cost of living is very high in London (don't know how it compares to the US), but that's where most of the jobs are.

Generally speaking, the north of England is cheaper to live in than the south. I'm sure PH would agree that you shouldn't live in Hull, though.

                    /edit:
                    Ireland is nice.
Don't worry about living in Northern Ireland, either - it's not exactly 100% safe, but where is these days?
If you happen to be an Ice Hockey fan I hear it is freakishly popular in Belfast.

                      Six months That's harsh.

Ask about the COE - it might take less time to process that and if you are only aiming for the UK it should be OK...

I've noticed that being nice and having the right words and body language, you can actually get these things worked out fast. Some of them won't go for it, but some of them do, because 98% of customers just complain to them and be negative..

Because first thing they usually do is ARCHIVE the application or whatever. If you can manipulate them to check them right away and perhaps even send them forward, then you have just saved few months .

As a geologost you may wnat to go to Aberdeen, thats where the oil industry is.
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

That's not actually how it works. It might be that the papers have to go the Washington for a nationality determination and there may be a lot of appliocations for the vice consul to work through. Nationality determinations take a lot of getting right as they can (in non-straightforward cases) require a lot of coffee and tons of thought to do...

PM me for more detail of how the process might work.
