  • Does Europe (exlcuding the UK) produce any good music?

This is a derivative thread from the Canada and U.K. music blows goats.

Now the question is does AMerica only recieve the most god-awful stuff from continental Europe or is it truly a "musical desert" as a friend from Malta once described European music.
When one is someone, why should one want to be something?

The only good European band outside of Britain seem to come occasionally from Sweden, and France has a couple with Air and Daft Punk.

Yes, Europe is musical desert, we hate all music and can't do any good stuff that we can call our own.
Also all the chicks won't shave and there are no elevators in Europe or air conditioning.
Cars basically sucks, and we are all anti-semitic nazis with gay accent.

I though Daft Punk was from Montreal

Anyway, Europe is top of the world for all forms of dance music and electronica. It's a clubber's paradise, although I know none of you on here enjoy that sort of thing

Is the person who posed the question Anglophone? A monolingual music fan peut-etre?

From France, as mentioned, Air and Daft Punk, and also Juliette Greco, Francoise Hardy and Edith Piaf. And of course Charles Trenet, Hector Zazou and the sublime Les Negresses Vertes (Zobi la Mouche is one of my all time favourite singles).

From Belgium, Jacques Brel (we'll pass on Plastic Bertrand).

From the Netherlands, for the old timers, Golden Earring, and of the songwriting team of Vanda and Young (behind the Easybeats), Mr. Vanda was a Dutch immigrant in Australia. Also the superb chanteuse Mathilde Santing, and Elly Ameling, who sings both classical and 'popular' music.

Germany gave us Kraftwerk, Can, Conny Plank, Giorgio Moroder, Holger Czukay, Neu, and Nico.

Sweden for our listening pleasure, endowed the world with the catchy melodies and strangely endearing Eurenglish of Abba.

Further East, you get the Terem Quartet from Russia, from the cold North, Mari Boine Perrsen (spelling?) the Sami songstress, Bjork from Iceland, the Trio Bulgarka from Bulgaria, Eleftheria Arvanitaki from Greece, along with Vangelis and Mikis Theodorakis.

          From Italy, Ennio Morricone.

In the world of Jazz, you get Stephane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Jan Garbarek, Jacques Loussier and plenty more besides. And that's not inlcuding Ireland, not all of whose singers/songwriters perform/compose exclusively in English...

In all the worlds, there are tons of music from here. Industry is just bigger in the US, so you might not always hear it on MTV. There are so many artists, you can go on and on.

              Rammstein, I like them

What about Sweddish bands? (abba.. etc)
oh and Cardigans... I used to like them.

              Speaking of realm of techno...

Robert Miles is european as well. Was he Italian? I forgot.

EDIT: Ooh yea and bjork. My friend had an unhealthy obsession with her. I kinda like some of her artsiness, but sometimes shes just kinda too weird for me.

Don't forget all those Fennoscandic metal bands. My favourite at the moment is the Finnish Nightwish. Much more imaginative than the bland nu-metal coming out these days.

Man, one thing Europe does have going for it:

Extreme Eskimo nu classic jazz fusion. We went to the festival a few weeks ago, those eskimos get at it

I wanted to add the rest of Europe to my thread, but I decided I hadn't heard enough of its music to know for sure that it sucked...

Since I'm into metal I sometimes have to ask myself whether the world outside Europe produces any good music

Long live death metal, music of the people!

                            Europe is so silly.
