I thought we were talking about current bands?

Currently, those three regions I listed produce the good rock music generally.

You've got to be kidding. Seattle has been dead as a music scene since the early nineties and the South doesn't produce anything either. California is the only place you mentioned with any sort of rock scene and its dominated mostly by rap-rock acts and pop punk. Ughhh.

Well almost all of the bands I still buy new albums from come from the Southern US, for one, so I would disagree with you...

        The rest come from California.

Seattle isn't as good as it used to be, so perhaps that could be removed.

California + Southern US it is.

Nebraska, of course, has produced no bands of note.

I would agree that rock here is heading down the drain. 3 Doors Down, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, and Lifehouse all released hugely disappointing followup albums. The last rock album I bought and really loved was Fuel's Something Like Human. And it was ages ago. I'm still waiting for another good one. However, I have never bought a Canadian album. I have downloaded one Alanis Morisette song an one Nickelback song. As compared to 50 CDs and 2000 downloaded songs from artists from non-Canadian countries.

311 got its start in Nebraska. Matthew Sweet also achieved a few hits during the Nineties. There are also some up and coming bands, like the Faint, which are gaining notice nationwide.

You should look into some Canadian music.

IIRC, orange is really into a couple Canadian bands like Our Lady Peace these days.

The problem, Jaguar, isn't that those countries aren't producing good music, it's that you just haven't been exposed to it.

Even Calgary, for instance, has a Classical music station, 2 Hip-hop/R&B stations, A pop top40 station, a rock station, and a jazz station, not to mention a bunch of weird inbetween stations...

                    • I knew all the bands that you mentioned... what others are you thinking of?

Our lady peace and the tragically hip are good enough that I woud download some of their songs if I didn't already have higher priority things to download or if I got rid of this 56k modem.

They're both. They grew up and formed in Omaha. They performed there and released all their indie records there, before getting a major record deal. They only moved out to Californina after they signed with a major label. So, while they have been in California for a while now, they are still a product of Nebraska.

And I guarantee you've heard a Matthew Sweet song before, even if you don't recognize the name. He's a great pop-rock songwriter.

BTW, what bands are there from Alberta?

                        • It doesn't matter if you know the bands, but what songs of theirs do you know?

Some of them have gained a lot of momentum in the US college scene, but most people haven't heard of them.

OLP sells out tiny halls or clubs in the US, and stadiums in Canada.

Oh wow, impressive. DC: 3 mix rock stations, 1 altrock station, 2 classic rock, 2 general rock, 1 top40, 2 jazz, 3 hip hop, 1 classical, 2 country, and a bunch of other random ones. In NY every single FM frequency has a radio station.

of course you do. But not in abundance. The city is so filled with so much variety that i think its healthy. Its a shame that you thought putting a shame emoticon as response to my post was funny.

                                Nickelback
Big Sugar (I don't think you'll know them, they're a very Canadian band and probably wouldn't be big in the US -- but they've got at least one song all about having "all hell for a basement" in Alberta )
Rhymes with Orange (Brand new band from black diamond, their first album is a huge hit here and they're releasing their Album under Sony Music in the US with a huge marketing push in 2003 sometime)
Jann Arden (I don't think she counts?)
                                Paul Brandt (Country)
                                Adam Greggory (Country)
