  • Pick Your Poison. Conscription or Mandatory Military Service.

Oh this should get heated. No banana option here.

And people in nations with one of the two requirements are more than welcome to chime in with their thoughts on the matter.
It's almost a certainty that one of the two will always exist.

    So, pick one.

forgive my ignorance but aren't they the same thing

            What a mo-ron.
Yesss, it's probably considered mandatory to report for duty if one is conscripted.
            You guys....

            Ok, let's simplify for them.

Conscription: A war is going on, not enough volunteers, a lottery list with birth dates is generated.

Mandatory Service: People are required, between high school and college let's say, since I have to do it all for you, to spend... let's go with 3 years, in military service.

I think I take too much crap here. This is NOT that hard a question.

I'd be in favor of having optional military (or civilian) service for a year or two or three, which would then give you the right to vote, hold public office, and access the federal welfare system (i.e. if you opted out of the military/civilian service then you wouldn't be able to vote, hold public office, or go on welfare). So I voted for the third option.

                    The Oxford Dictionary...

Conscription: a summons for compulsory (esp. military) duty.

Ratsass. I left out the Optional Service. Tough. Since it was left out, it's not a choice. Stuff happens. Too bad.

And no, Stinger. You either have conscription during a war, or mandatory military service for all, peace time or war time.

Man. The worst of this is that I let frustration take me to saying "You guys". Like a Chicagoite or something.

right now I know the question, you should have madatory service in war only.

EDIT- if the volunteer army can cope then obviously Its not needed

I will be surprised, no, make that shocked, if a veteran comes into this thread and picks conscription.

I would refuse either because I'm not shooting anyone.

In WWII there was a close medical support unit from Britain made up of people who didn't want to fight... high casualties but still, I'd rather do something like that if I had to.
