  • If you are your conference champion, you deserve and will get a shot at the national title. Any team that didn't win their own conference can't really whine that they deserved a chance at the National Championship.

This idea is just ripe with controversy. What if Oklahoma goes into the Big 12 title game undefeated this year and gets beat by a three loss Nebraska team? It could happen. Are you really going to claim that Nebraska deserves to be in the playoff and Oklahoma doesn't?

Sadly, we seem to be back to ideas that destroy the importance of the regular season. Stick with your one-loss tournament idea, Ming. It was much better.

Yep... My logic is simple... Nebraska was the Big 12 champion, and Oklahoma wasn't. Your logic seems to be "whoever" wins the most games, even if they can't win the game that counts. It would be Oklahoma's bad luck if that happened, but at least they lost it on the field, and had the OPPORTUNITY to win... instead of letting a computer decide if they should even have an OPPORTUNITY to be considered.

And let's turn it around... are you really advocating that a team that COULDN'T EVEN WIN THEIR OWN CONFERENCE has the right to play for a National Championship?

Teams mature and improve throughtout the season... If Nebraska did beat Oklahoma, who is to really say that Oklahoma is still the better team at the end of the season.... expecially when you consider that Oklahoma did lose the game

I like this far better than my earlier suggestion...
Any other system would allow not allow ALL Conference Champions an opportunity to prove they are worthy or not. This system gives ALL 117 or so 1 - A team a chance at the beginning of the year to be the champ.
How can you be fairer than that...

      • Screw fair to all the teams.
I agree with Drake, I like your 0 or 1 lose 8 team playoff better. I think of recent March madness when a certain big 10 team won the tournament after being the lowest seed and got into the tournament. I wouldn't want to see that happen here. I think excellence throughout the year should count for something. They don't play that many games. Let's make sure each one is important.

        • I think the outcome of that Big 10 tournament might have been a tad different if going in the teams knew that only the team that won would go to the big dance

          • Maybe, maybe not. You never know.
The thought of a sub .500 team making the playoffs isn't my idea of a national championship tournament.
            It would happen eventually.

It doesn't seem to cheapen the NCAA Basketball Tournament

Unlike in Basketball where many of the conferences have post season tournaments and invite just about any team in the conference that has a heartbeat... It's not like that in Football.

              • The big difference is in the number of games. When you play 35 games, I don't feel a few loses should disqualify you. But when you only play 14, it probably should. But just my opinion.

                • Not to threadjack, but...

Which big-10 team are you talking about, Rah? 1989 Michigan?

Ahhh, wait. By "winning the tournament" you meant the Big-10 tourney. My bad.

                  Anyway, what team? Indiana?

Yes, but there are fewer arguments. Ideally the champion would be undefeated after playing a season full of powerhouse opponents, but that can't always happen. A 1-loss champ of a 8 team playoff is hard to argue with, considering that only the team that dished out the one loss, can complain. Everyone else will either have lost one or more regular season games or a playoff game. Probably, the team that handed out the one loss, lost 2 or more, anyway, so their argument holds less weight.

OTOH, a 3-loss champ can be second guessed by all the 2- and 1- loss teams, of which there will be many. More controversy - which I'd like to reduce.

So? The regular season in College Football isn't FAIR!
Nice whine. Unless we go to a 128 team playoff instead of a regular season, this will always be an issue. An 8 team playoff based on regular season standings is a compromise between your position, and that of the purists who think the pre-BCS was a good idea.

                    • Question: What is a champion?

the best team over the whole year, OR

the best team at the end of the year?

A large playoff with 2- and 3- loss teams participating suggests the latter.

A poll system suggests the former.

                      There's gotta be a balance, hasn't there?

Most sports suck, especially when compared to college football.

Having only conference champs in the tourney is a stupid idea. You would send teams like last year's LSU team to the tourney. Hell, Nebraska would still be in the hunt for the national title this year. Now, I love my Huskers, but there is no way in hell they should have any sort of opportunity to win the national title this year. No team with two or more losses should have a chance, period.
