Oops. UNLV isn't from a major conference either - the Mountain West Conference.
At the time they were in the Big West conference.

MWC has Utah BYU, New Mexico as well, all are legitimate Top 25 teams, every year.

    • Except, in your strength of schedule scenario, Miami or Nebraska won't play a team that could hurt their strength of schedule.

Why not? They do it right now. Do you really think that Utah State and McNeese State helped out Nebraska's strength of schedule? Nebraska will play anyone, as long as that team agrees to play both games of the series in Nebraska. If you want a home and away series, however, you better be a good team.

They were still in the WAC back when they won their titles. Still weren't part of a major conference, though. 2 out of 20...
        Once again Big West.

          • I likes this " i wouldn't want a team with 3 losses to have a chance" stance.

The NCAA basketball tournament isn't about who is the best, it's about who is the best right now .

New England wasn't the best team last year.

Anaheim isn't the best team this year.

BYU won a National Championship in 1984 because they didn't lose a game.

Does anybody think they were the best team?

On the flip side, in 1996, they had a team that went 14-1, losing only to Washington.

They didn't get a BCS at large bid.

They got the cotton bowl where they beat Kansas St.

That team, by the way, was the first college team in history to win 14 games in a season.

IIRC, Jan 1 was a Sunday that year, and BYU refused to play on Sundays for school policy reasons... so they never even got tested by a top-ranked team in a bowl.

That could very well be, I can't seem to remember either.

Oh, I remember it I'm just not absolutely sure . I do definitely remember some controversy about BYU as #1, though, and I wanted to add a disclaimer in case some Mormon gets mad at me

So do I, things like: Bo Didley Tech come to mind.

                      • Pop quiz:

Of the Big East, the ACC, and the MAC, which conference has the greatest number of teams currently ranked in the Top 25 of the coaches' poll?

Incidentally, I have no problem with a three- or four-loss team winning the national title. If a 7-4 Middle Tennessee State can beat a 10-2 Texas, 10-1 Florida State, 10-1 Oregon, and an 12-0 Oklahoma, all in four successive weeks, well, color me convinced--them there are your national champs.

In Division 1-A, you mean. The 1989 Georgia Southern Eagles went 15-0, the first college team in any division to do that. The 1998 Georgia Southern Eagles were 14-0, and then lost the title game in the Championship game.

                              January 1st, 1985 was on a Tuesday.

The controversies were whether a 6-5 Michigan team deserved to go to any bowl, and why didn't the major bowls pick BYU?
