(Keeping the playoff as small as possible - as few as 4 teams in some years, as many as eight in others, or only a single title game if there are consensus undefeated #1 and #2 teams - would help eliminate the unfairness of the truly deserving teams being subjected to extra hurdles when they've proved themselves in the season.)
On the other hand, take this year for example. If Miami loses, then the BCS will have to pick one of about 3 or 4 1-loss teams to play for the title. If OSU wins that title game, no problem - they deserve to be #1, nothing unfair about that. The problem is if OSU loses the Fiesta, then you have 3 or 4 teams all arguing that they should have had the chance to play OSU and be #1. That, to me, is more unfair than the playoff would be.
