Italian literature and plays were available throughout the 16th century and can be identified as the source material for almost all Shakespeare's plays set there. There is absolutely nothing in the plays themselves that indicates he had to have gone there at all.

Spelling was far from fixed before the 18th century, which is why names fluctuate a lot prior to then. To be honest, the spelling nazis
didn't gain control until the 19th century. So the fact that there are numerous ways to spell Shakspere is not really an argument at all.
