Except for the owners of the site the Moderators all started as posters just like the rest of us. What do you have against them expressing their oppinions?

It's not like they ban people just for disagreeing with them (unlike on certain other forums...)

A sense of humor is always helpfull in an online discussion. Fighting is less needed that way.

I fight back all the time. Supporting evidence and examples help. For instance you didn't aswer the question. What is it you don't like about the moderators expressing their oppinions? Without some sort of reason it looks like sour grapes.

Around here the mods have to be able to restrain their tempers. Apparently in some other forums that is not always the case. So considering the mods have to behave themselves I find it reasonable to be extra polite to them. Its just not fair to poke at them when they aren't allowed to fight back except with bans and such.

They don't like flames anyway. Wimps. I like flame wars but its not allowed here. I think I am losing my edge.

Ethelred, you are one of the smarter ones around here, and I don't mean that to be condescending, because I am certainly not the smartest or the most educated one here. I still don't know who claims that title yet. My problem with the moderators giving their opinions constantly is that by virtue of the fact that they are moderators, their opinions carry more weight, especially with some of the weaker posters, and they cripple many of the discussions or steer them onto a track that they prefer. In my opinion they can do this by the power of their title and not necessarily by the power of their argument.

I will grant you that they don't seem to ban anyone capriciously and that certain posters seem to beg to be banned. I don't want to discuss the moderators too much, as I enjoy coming here and I don't want to tempt them to ban me.

MtG's opinions often carry quite a bit of weight, but it's got nothing to do with the fact that he's a moderator and has everything to do with the fact that he steamrolls everybody. Ming and Rah also have their opinions, but they aren't necessarily more weighty--people are just more careful about resorting to flaming them, and that's not really that bad of a thing.

The MooClan forums are pretty good, except the posting isn't really the regular, and the game they play (Q2 Chaos) I don't play anymore. Now I'm jsut in the clan by name only (thus, I am SwitchMoo, not just Switch). But the content is pretty good, although a definite lacking in any academic or controversial subjects like here.

Poly is still my favourite, though

Not very many boards will allow you to rant about Christopher Reeves in the manner of the Straight Dope. My favorite line:

"I'm with you, Cosmo. Sure, the guy's had a struggle, but when you come right down to it, all he did was not die. Hell, I do that every day. Where's my Time Magazine feature article?"

I also post ocasionally at Ambrosia Software's web fora. Ambrosia software basically makes games for mac, so it's like Apolyton only people are smarter and have more style…
The only thing worse than it is that I'm rather a newbie to it (only about 500 posts) and it's a bit less active. Also I'm just used to the people around here… I have far too much history with this site…
Also another plus they have is that they have TWO off topic forums, something APOLYTON SHOULD HAVE KEPT. *cough cough*

at the idea of moderator's words carrying more weight than regular posters…
