going to have to agree with frankie here...french women definately make up for any french short comings...it is, however, a beautiful country. If we could just annex it and get rid of the french men, it would be a damn nice place....
"Mal nommer les choses, c'est accroître le malheur du monde" - Camus (thanks Davout)

"I thought you must be dead ..." he said simply. "So did I for a while," said Ford, "and then I decided I was a lemon for a couple of weeks. A kept myself amused all that time jumping in and out of a gin and tonic."

          Americans are ungrateful...

Without the French the Americans would have been toast in the War of Independence!

Everyday that you wake up you should feel grateful to the French for your existence…

Perhaps New York should give back the Statue of Liberty too!

The reason Yanks get the sh*ts in Paris is because just as they refuse to speak any language other than English, the French refuse to speak to anyone in any language other than French. It is their country after all!

Not to mention that New Orleans wouldn’t exist, and that would be a crying shame as it seems to be the city with the most personality in the US.

It always makes me chuckle when I see an American complain about arrogance…

P.S. Brillat-Saverin was a good man indeed! My G/f has his ‘The Physiology of Taste’ on loan from the library as I write this!

Of course, his book would be a cultural anathema to Americans considering the blandness of ‘American’ food, so it's little wonder none of them have replied to you Pand…
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Perhaps its the food. Then again I have heard the rest of France also thinks Parisians are rude. Kind of like most Americans think about New Yorkers.

Must be your inferiority complex. Do Ausies still mostly think their accent is crude?

I take it the author had only been to the midwest. Must have avoided California and Texas entirely. American food is not just steak and potatos. Or McDonalds even if that did spring from California.

Is it because you have been taught that France screws you over every time it can?

I allow Spain a lot of that credit. It a fraction of the distance overland from frnce to Cadiz than to Moscow. Napoleon made it to Moscow, but not to Cadiz, and the casulties piled up from 1808 to to 1814 are similar in number to thoses inflicted by Russia.

I think the British have to take most of the credit fro that

There was 200 000 soldiers in Spain to hold the ground. Though they suffered heavy casualties, they were still not destroyed, which means they took less than 200 000 deads during five years (1809-1814).
There was over 400 000 deads in Russia in less than a year.

And about the topic : it's called "cultural opposition".
Frenchs and Americans are both very arrogants and proud people. They have both experience of being the indisputed world leader (though USA has much more a lead and is ACTUALLY the leader) and experience of having overwhelming cultural edge.
On top of that, Frenchs always considered Americans as ignorant spoiled brats with a mercantile subculture, while Americans always looked at Frenchs as snobbish d*cks pissing everyone with their past glory.
How can you imagine they could like each other

Notice by the way that both USA and France have more bash-threasds than all other nations put together. Isn't it amazing ?

Well your right about French arrogance.

What overwhelming cultural edge are talking about. Just because they had have a few intellectuals who could ponce around talking about matters philisophical does not mean they were culturally dominant.

                              • heh. I think the intellectual "product" of France by far outpasses England's (or any other "modern" european nation's for that matter).
