  • US isn't very picky when it comes to chosing allies

who's worse? The Taliban or the US-backed Northern Alliance? Both are equally guilty of warcrimes and crimes against humanity, yet one is backed by the US and the other isn't. Really sad. So much for taking the moral highground in the war on terror. Fighting for human rights and Afghan freedom, my ass.

However, I do agree that we aren't very picky about our allies. After all, how else do you explain our alliance with the French and Dutch.

Since when does morality have anything to do with foreign policy. We have a republican administration you know.

I was just thinking about Tom Clancy's heroic mujahadeen in The Cardinal of the Kremlin. The Archer would probably have been a Taliban leader--he was a Pashtun and well-educated (at least when it came to killing infidels).

Clancy always threw a token heroic Russian in his books too.

It's ironic that we supported terriorists against the Soviet Union and now find ourselves targeted. Reap what you sow.

No he was religious but not nutty about it. He would have been your more bog standard mujahadeen who became the northern alliance.

The Taliban played no part in getting rid of the Sovs

If you want to know who will be the US enemies in 10-15 years time, just look at who there allies are today.
An incomplete list of former allies who are now enemies or were enemies after being formerely allied (officially or unofficially):

                    Saddam Hussein
                    Afghanistan
                    Noriega
                    USSR
                    Iran
                    Serbia

I'm sure there are alot more, I'm not including the dictators we supported who haven't called enough attention to themselves to cause us the feign animosity (i.e., Pinochet)

The NA contained several vile elements, most particularly Doustum's gang, but of course they were there, had international recognized rights in the conflict, and were ready to fight, whereas foreign pacifist cowards would be entirely useless.

But the NA doew look wonderful in comparison to the Taliban, which was developing habits of ethnic, religious, and cultural genocide.
