Snappy: So I take it that you don't buy this "instability" argument either?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Some trivia: a) there is a HUGE military airport outside Siauliai that was build for the purpose of airborne invasion of Sweden

      b) Swedish map companies bought soviet military maps after the Cold War - they were MUCH more accurate, showed more roads and passable trails

DanS: I don't think that Snappys post i directly linked to the issue of stability but to Norways incentive to join. It also states that Sweden didn't in the same direct way see a direct need to join Nato. that's what I've stated all along. This is a key issue as a membership in Nato would imply (as stated in §5 of the Nato treaty) that Sweden would be forced into a war the country might be able to avoid.

Now, if Sweden for some security reason would want to join Nato there's the potentional of instability in the region. Finland was locked in the VSB-pact for friendship and aid with the Soviet union. As a alturistic reason Swedish politicians argued that Sweden shouldn't join Nato as this would mean that the soviet union might put futher pressure on Finland. This alturistic statement was however only part of the issue as it was first and foremost not in Swedish interest to be a target.

The swedish defensive line was to make a soviet invasion (as the first step to take Norway) too costly. If Sweden was a member of Nato this would be impossible. If all this happened during the cold war the strategic situation would change and cause a period of instablity.

Yeah, right, the USSR killed 1/3rd of it's population
Hey, don't forget when Finland had 1/2 of it's working class killed.

An opponent whose ranks were harder hit than any other group opposing them. Our people consistently put their lives on the line opposing that sytem, trying to overthrow it and restore the revolution. But that fact doesn't mean I'm going to lie about the system either. The truth is horrible enough without having to add imaginary mountains of bodies.

                    • I still like that sculpture. It's the combination of those ominous and jagged outcroppings and the ornate paving that does it.

I nearly used the word "juxtaposition" there, but edited it at the last moment. I'm still not ready to come out of the ponce closet.
