  • Swedish Socialist Art: The Uglier Truth

This is a follow-up thread to an earlier one; check out this:

if you haven't already. Return here when you're sufficiently freaked out.

Anyhow; a quick background. As most people here will know, Sweden played a role that can only be described as worthy of contempt the last century - after having collaborated with the Nazi during most of WWII, the Social Democrats promptly changed their tune and became serious Soviet bootlickers all the way to the fall of the Wall. One of the few redeeming aspects is the story of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who almost single-handedly managed to save close to a hundered thousand Jews from extermination in nazi Hungary during the very end of the war, and who was murdered by the Soviet communists when they "liberated" that country.

Wallenberg's heroic deeds have been remembered and commemorated all over the world. There are monuments to the man in more places than you can mention. Except that is, in Sweden. Until the fall of the Wall, the Social Democrats officially downplayed the Wallenberg issue, in order not to "offend" the Soviets. And even after the fall of the Soviet Union, it took more than ten years for Sweden to raise a monument, and then it happened only because a opposition government took the initative during one of the extremely few non-Social Democrat stints in power. Still, the Social Democrats were soon back, and while they couldn't stop the project, they now had the final word on how to execute it.

You guessed it by now, haven't you? That awful, disgusting pile of elephant poo is the new Raoul Wallenberg monument in Stockholm. While the Social Democrats couldn't stop the monument from happening, the could sure send a clear message: we crap on Raoul Wallenberg, we crap on the people he saved and we crap on the people he didn't manage to save. This awful pile of sun-dried feces is what the Social Democrats in Sweden think Wallenberg deserves.

Why in heaven's name would they do a thing like that, you ask yourself? Oh, the Social Democrats don't want to be reminided of how much Wallenberg managed to do - it raises the question of what Sweden could have managed had it bothered to do anyting at all durting that terrible time. Even more important, though, is that the Wallenbergs happen to be the richest and easily the most influential family in Sweden, and so the Social Democrats have always hated them - not that this has prevented any party from cooperating with the other.

Behold. The festering pile of crap depicted in that other thread is the ultimate expression of socialist malevolence and envy, even when it has to be done at the expense of one of the few genuinly positive Swedish contributions to the world. This is the even uglier truth behind the ugly Socialist art.

Below is a picture of Raoul Wallenberg (1912 - ?):

"I think the real figures probably are about a million or less." - David Irving on the number of Holocaust victims.

And now the evil social democrats are serious US bootlickers but that doesn't seem to bother you
I'd say this is Swedens typical way of staying out of trouble. Cowardly, yes, but at least we have not been invaded for some time now

Sounds like the SDs need to be shown the exit door at the next ballot.

That is amazing. I had actually given Sweden some credit due to the fact that Wallenberg was Swedish. Combat Ingrid has convinced me to leave the credit with Wallenberg and let the country as a whole be judged by the elephant poo memorial.

I still suspect moomin of actually being Sir David in disguise.

Sir David, you can't possibly believe what you yourself are saying. Quite a few people find the monument a very strong statement, not everything falls into your crazy right-wing conspiracy theory. Get off it.

My favourite insane right-wing assertion has always been the "Soviet Bootlicking" one, as anyone with merest knowldege of recent Swedish history will realise on what side Sweden would have stood had a war actually occurred... Note that not even the Moderates dared break neutrality, in face of public opinion.

This is not to excuse stuff like the Baltic Deportations, easily a low point in Swedish history, and I'm no PA Hansson fan, but we're not talking anything the Right wouldn't have done differently.

Woohoo! I got the closest, I guessed it represents a politician (and while Wallenberg wasn't exactly a politician, he was nevertheless an important person.)

Crappy art aside (message or no message, it is still bad art), I also gave Sweden credit for Wallenberg's actions. Oh, well.
                        I refute it thus!
