Undefeated, took out the dominant empire of his day, conquered the known world. C'mon, nobody is in Alexander's league.

      MANNERHEIM!
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency

Given what he did with what he had, I would give the title to Rommel.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I would have expected to have seen at least one naval commander on that list.

Gengis Khan. No one else has ever conquered so much in so little time.

well, it all depends on what you mean by military leader. Julius C. was not only a good leader of men but an excellent emperor.

how about Nelson just for the fun of it?
Yeah, Moe, that team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

Philip the Barbarian was certainly in Alexander's league. Alexander won with Philip's army and the Greeks Hoplites that Philip beat.

                      Philip was also undefeated.

I voted for Alexander anyway but it was the two of them they made the conquest of Persia possible.

Temujin and Alexander were the best field commanders, and had never been defeated. Sun Tzu was the best strategist.

Rommel had far more resources comparatively than Temujin back then.

                              Definitely Sun Tzu.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)
