Scandinavia is a geographical term... the two countries of the Scandinavian peninsula, i.e. Norway and Sweden. I'm not sure if Denmark is Scandinavia. Or Iceland. Anyway, 'Fennoscandia' adds Finland to the mess.
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

my encyclopedia says Plinius (whoever that is) used the word about "a big fertile island in the north", possibly refering to Skåne in southern Sweden.

                      my theory

i think Skåne is Scania in Latin or Greek so it makes a bit sense

                      skåne => scania => scandinavia

Scandinavia = The peninsula of Sweden & Norway
Fennoscandia = Finland, Russian Karelia and the Kola peninsula added to that

Nordic Countries = Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland.

In political text, Scandinavia usually refers to (all of) the nordic countries.

                            I beg to differ.

                            It's always been:

Scandinavia = Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Nordic countries = The 3 above plus Finland, Iceland - and also the Faroe Islands, but not Greenland.

Wait, what is the relationship between the Faroes and Denmark? Are they considered a country of their own? Do they have representative in the UN? If they tried putting an embassy in every country, would they have to use their entire population to staff them? If so, would they mind getting away from the Faroes?

Nationalistic? I think so.. I don't know about them swedes though. I think they are a bit too. And of course we have a nice love-hate relationship, but for fun and in good spirits, not real hate.

As for us not speaking to people, it's true. I just came back from supermarket, nobody said a word to each other. Not even the girl on the counter! But it's not to be taken bad or rude behaviour. We don't like small talk (very few exceptions), and lots of foreigners take it hard . You guys just can't keep your mouth shut!
We, for the most part, feel completely comfortable being quiet and for example driving a long way.
I think we take your fake cultures of being nice as bs and butt kissing for the most part .
But it's not like friends won't speak.. just people you don't know.
I still remember few months back some guy sitting next to me in greyhound (in USA) was talking all this and that, and was very uncomfortable with me. He thought i was an ******* for not chatting with him for the whole trip. That's ok.. i think he was an ******* for not shutting up! He wasn't making a real conversation though, i think he thought he was obligated to speak with me because i was sitting next to him.

edit: Another example which is more accurate is when i got lots of 'how are you doing sir' which is nice of course to hear. But when i opened my mouth they quickly continued, so i really couldn't answer there. Point is, why ask someone something, if you don't want to know the answer? I quick smile answered with nod is perfectly enough. It's like 'How are you doing' thinking the same time 'but what do i care'. Empty words!
                                Sorry for the rant.
