Assumong that your MB only supports ATA 66 not ATA 100 you can just swap the two cables. (ATA 100 requires a 80 conductor cable and ATA 66 need only a 40 conductor cable).

      PS

If ATA 66 needs the 80 conductor cable I am postive that some Canaidian guy will eat my lunch.

Don't worry about swaping cables, you can't hurt anything it just will not work if you don't get it right.

Promethus, I dont know anything about AT66 and ATA 100

I dont know what my motherboard has.

Will definitely open up the case and see what kind of motherboard I have, since I realize that this is critical.

            WHEN I GET SOME SLEEEEP

anyway, thanks again, will talk later.

You guys have contradicting info about what I should have on its own IDE cable though.

BTW I entered the BIOS of my PC and it said

              IDE UMDA (or something)

              and

              IDE PIO

I saw that the HD and the CD-ROM are on the IDE UMDA (or something - both in different IDE slots of course)

could the 3rd IDE slot be the IDE PIO (what is that? can I hook up my burner on that?)

UDMA is ultra DMA. That is the faster version.

Just connect both the CD-ROM and CD-R on the same cable and stick it in one of the UDMA slots.

Put the HDD with the other one.

Of course, this is not good if you need to do a lot of CD copying. In which case separate the CD-ROM and CD-R.

Please send link to a MB with 4 IDE connectors (i.e. is able to handle 6 IBE devices as this is better than standard SCSI interface).
You mean 8, as older SCSI can support 7, but one is taken up by the controller.

                      Try 2themax 4GA+

Ok I got the godamn IDE cable with the split.

I asked if I could just switch the cables I already had and they told me better not to because HD speed might suffer.

ANyway, I'll connect it when I get home.

BTW when I asked for the IDE cable they asked me if I wanted it for CD-Roms or for HDs. I told them CD-ROMs and they gave me one that is not as fast as the other but they said that's enough for CD-Roms.

I'll connect the CDROM with the BURNER making the BURNER master.

                        I'll leave the HD alone.

BTW the techs were as contradictory about this as you guys

I wont be doing lots of CD copying but lyts of MP3 burning so i guess thats the way to do.

                        again thanks for your help

I'll report when the deed is done

You should realise this is a normal thing among geeks

Do realise that it is not the cables that affect transfer speed but it is the IDE slots. EIDE (or UDMA) runs faster while using wider cables. PIO is slower.

That's not what the guy from whom I bought the cable told me.

He said I needed different cables if I used them for HDs and different if I used them for CDROMS

                              Nah, trust us.

I suspect your CD-R runs on EIDE so the narrower cable won't work. Just a hunch, though.
