To a communist like chegitz, arms buildups can only occur in two ways: Either it's the capitalists who do it, or it's the capitalists who provoke it. A communist state would never build up stocks of assault weapons just by itself, oh no.

The revival of Eurowiggies apart, I'd be very worried were it not for the present US admin's habit of crying wolf and generally acting like they're spoiling for a fight.

Right now, I'm not sure it's anything more than China wanting to assert itself as a superpower.

          Should I know you, Jaakko?

Please refrain from the infantile name calling.

"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28

First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Scaremongering. The US would be willing to fight for Taiwan, and China knows it.

                If the shoe fits Winston...

It's just that Chegitz seems foremost a communist idealist, a far cry from the less than savoury communist dictatorships of our world.
And when you consider that he's one of the more thoughtful posters around here, the wide brush you're tarring him with looks more than a little disingenious.

Thoughtful...? I never saw that. He seems pretty one-eyed to me.

Comparing me to Wiglaf, now there's applying a wide brush. Without even knowing me to boot.

I try not to say rude things about you, Winston. And when I do, I at least say it with a smilie so you know I'm being silly and not mean.

Cloud9, It's well known the paper is owned by Reverand Moon. Study up on the Unification Church. . . . You know who Rev. Moon is, don't you? He's that Korean guy who thinks he's the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Heck, you could at least do a google search yourself. Try this article from the Washington Post, "Moon Speech Raises Old Ghosts as the Times Turns 20."

Yeah well I guess that Jaakko character barging in here and calling me Wiglaf got me a little aggravated. I could have been nicer in my wording there.

Still I spoke my mind though.

                      Oh alright, there you go:

I never could figure out why the West hasn't embargoed China to bring about a change to democracy. Especially after Tiananmen.

No that's not true, I can figure it out all right, the prospect of developing future markets there is too big a hindrance for an embargo. So it's reserved for countries like Cuba Iraq and North Korea. There's double standards for you. It disgusts me every time we fall on our stomachs for this despotic regime. Like when they intimidated the Danish government last year into not accepting a visit from the newly elected Taiwanese president.

Boycot those human rights abusing communist bastards! Better today than tomorrow. For the sake of both the Chinese and the rest of the World.

The US, and most of the west, also support the Pakistani leadership (military dictatorship and the Saudi leadership (dictatorial monarchy). At least the US doesn't support the Chinese governement, it merely doesn't oppose it. But it's far worse that the US is actively supporting nations like Pakistan.

Sorry, but I don't think so. Not calling China on their well instituted and systematic human rights abuse - among other things - is far, far worse.

                            Very funny.

Reverand Moon may head the paper, but he doesn't own the company. The Washington Times is actually owned by the Washington Post Company, which is run by Mr. Donald E. Graham. Check it out!

China is highly deficient in amphibious capabilities, so there is no way they can mount an effective invasion -- especially considering the amount of naval might the US already has there and how much Japan will likely be capable of deploying by the time China could invade Taiwan.

The strategy they likely will continue pursuing is integrating Taiwan with the mainland economically, then threatening those economic links if Taiwan doesn't start to integrate politically. If Taiwan resists there, China can then use those shiny missiles of theirs to bombard the island and seriously damage the infrastructure and island as a whole to the point that it is no longer an economically viable unit.

Not to mention that China's air force could never gain air superiority over Taiwan, which is a completely different story...
