I think going to hell for anyone is rare- but so is going straight to heaven. The vast majority of people are neither all good nor all bad, so the vast majority of people would go to purgatory for a certain period time depending on the gravity of their sins for which contrition was not made. After the soul is done with purgatory, they can then go to heaven."I'm moving to the Left" - Lancer

Question
If God created this world, why did he create such a ****ed up world? Is he a sadist? Why are millions of children around the world starving to death? Why doesn't he stop this?
I am forced to conclude, if God exists, he is a sadist. If he does not exist, well, that makes more sense then."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Asher,
The religicists' line is that God didn't create suffering, that is created by man, or just circumstance. God doesn't exercise direct control over the events that happen in the world (unless its for exceptional cases, like Biblical miracles).
Suffering is also somehow good for the spirit and part of what it is to be a human being. But suffering on Earth is rewarded with enternal bliss in the afterlife.
At least, I think that's what they say.Tutto nel mondo è burla

"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

It sounds like an excuse that took people many years to put together, and it's a total copout.
But I guess when you're used to hearing it all your life you would agree with it, Cloud9."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

God created man. God is omnipotent, no? That's why he is God. So why did he create such an imperfect being capable of suffering? To add to life experience?
...
So basically we've got people starving to DEATH around the world, and this is human's fault, which are God's creation. But this is all good, because if you suffer now you will have eternal bliss in the afterlife. How convenient.
Isn't it obvious this is just a way for religion to comfort people into thinking "there's a light at the end of the tunnel, it doesn't matter if you starve to death now, Allah will give you 72 virgins when you go to heaven", or whatever."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Well supposing that God, heaven, and Hell do exist, and supposing that I manage to live a fairly good life from this point on, but go to Hell because I do not believe in God, I shall consider myself a political prisoner held for thought crimes, and will be quite content in resisting God's tyranny to the best of my meagre abilities."The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists."

So the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heal."
To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase you pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."
To Adam he said, "Because you have listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, you must not eat of it. Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." --Genesis 3:14-17
