  • Scathing poll for Blair...

(Taken from The Mirror) A recent Face poll, the biggest of its kind in the UK, amongst Britain's younger generation (16-29) does note bode well for Tony Blair or the British right. Amongst the figures, here are the ones I found most interesting -

    National Pride

    - 83% would leave Britain permanently to live abroad.
    - 65% have felt ashamed to be British (the main reasons being violence and football hooliganism).
    - Only 30% would risk their lives for their country.

    Trust

    - 85% believe corporations cannot be trusted.
    - 84% believe the same of politicians
    - 76% believe the same of the media

    - 73% do not trust the Labour Government.

    Voting

25% would vote Lib Dem, 23% Labour, 13% Tory.

    Drug Use

95% of 16-19 year olds drink.

51% used cannabis, 36% regualar ciggarettes.

"The majority feel that Britain is still resting on past glories such as the Empire and great British inventions".

Some interesting results. I knew patriorism was low amoungst my generation, but not that low.

    Tee hee hee.

Hey, Brits, what are the chances that Lib. Dems replace Tories as the second largest party in next election?

        Low.

It's possible that they will in the next few elections, if the Tories carry on the way they are.

I think they'll take the hint after the next election and become more libertarian.

          Hee hee.

There's something amusing about more of the population using the illegal one over the legal one.

I met a few people from the UK when I was in Thailand and they didn't think too highly of their own country. This was the first I heard of this so I didn't think much of it but the poll seems to confirm that there is widespread dissapointment.

I get the feeling it's just the British being British (national attitude).

The difference between them and us in Canada is that they have specific places they'd rather live (the US, Australia, etc.) whereas we're just generally dissatisfied without having any better ideas....

Oh, I wish. I wish. Although actually some people are saying it's a real possibility - Iain Duncan Smith has (according to most polls) done even less for his party than Hague before him. By contrast, Kennedy is well-liked (if not wonderfully well-known ) and is seen as by far the most honest of the three leaders.

Lib Dem problem is that they pick up voters from everywhere - Labour, Tory, Old Labour - and so tend to have problems with their policies (they'd really like to be more left-wing, but they'd lose too many votes IMHO). However, they gets combatted by the fact that conference and not the leadership forms policy.

Some polls have the Lib Dems on 22% nationally. If they were actually to get that, it'd be great. People are really, really getting disillusioned with the Government over here.

I wonder what a similar poll taken in the other western democracies would show? Probably not the same degree of self-loathing, but I'd bet a fair amount of dissatisfaction all around.

Polls among the U.S. youth, while certainly not nearly as much as this one, show they are also dissatisfied with the entrenched parties, more liberal in their mindset and more prone to thinking the grass is greener elsewhere. I think it's a trend 'round the world.

Crime is pathetically bad in my area - mainly because there are drunken gangs on the street virtually every night and it's months since I saw a police officer.

Football hooligans are very annoying. I think they should have their passports revoked permanently . They don't deserve to travel the world if that's how they behave.
