I'm for legalizing not because it is a "victimless" crime now but to reduce the victimization. Lots of men buy sex and lots of women are "willing" to sell it whether out of greed, drug problems, abuse etc. Currently its my understanding that most prostitutes face deplorable lives and that many are forced into the lifestyle. So I can't say I think its a good thing BUT making it legal allows there to be some governmental control on the abuses and takes it out of the sole control of criminal elements. If it were legalized we could at least have some assurance that the sex workers would have adequate access to health care/ contraceptions and would make it much less likely that a woman would be "forced" into the trade ( I leave aside the question of whether a woman who enters prostitution out of bleak economic necessity . . . probably the vast majority . . . are actually forced by their circumstances . .

Well, prostitution itself is legal in Canada as well. You can call an escort service and have them come to your hotel, explicitly arrange sex for money and you will have broken zero Canadian laws . .

But there are a number of things that ARE illegal

              1. communicating for the purpose of prostitution in a public place -- essentially makes street prostitution illegal. Note that a public place specifically includes a motor vehicle so talking "business" in the car is still illegal

              2. being found in or running a common bawdy house-- some "massage parlours" get busted on this occassionally

              3. Procuring a prostitue-- sometimes they try to nail the agencies with this one

              4. " Living off the avails of prostitution"-- designed to get pimps as it does not apply to a prostitute benefitting from her own work

But at the end of the day, prostitution itself is not illegal. You could tell a cop that you had a full blown orgy with 3 girls and tell him exactly what you paid and there is nothing to charge you with as long as you are careful to keep all communications for the purpose either over the phone or inside your own home or hotel room

How does prostitution prevent the spread of disease? If anything it spreads disease. It's not feasible to institute adequate disease monitoring, Are you going to test them daily, or make the use of condoms mandatory? If the latter, you'll need to come up with some sort of certification process that ensures that the condoms won't disintegrate when used.

As a resident of the state of Nevada, I must protest. Prostitution is NOT legal in Las Vegas OR Reno. As far as I know, it is legal in one county, some thirty to sixty miles away from Las Vegas.

But as to your question, I think that women (and men for that matter) have the right to do whatever they want with their bodies, and it is not the business of the government. However, people do have a right to say whether they want it in their neighborhoods, and it should have borders of legality. Women strip to give others sexual pleasure. If we want to be the moral police, we might as well ban that too.

I think the issue is what do you mean by "legalize?" If it means having whores openly parading in residential neighborhoods, then I'm against it. If it means streetwalkers parading anywhere that I, my wife or my kids would normally go, I'm against it. If it means advertising for their services in our newspapers, on TV or in another media of general circulation, then I'm against it.

With the above understanding, decriminalization and regulation might be acceptable. I would I not call it legalization because "legal" implies certain rights -- for example to parade openly in residential neighborhoods that I would hope we are all against.
