        Generous, Ramo.

          Oh come on Stewart, answer...

...as Iain has stated, the circumstances are completely different as he is a Kurd being conscripted by the Turkish armed forces. Slightly different to the Germans being conscripted by the German armed forces.

Deary, deary me. Next time I am in Aberystwyth I shall mention this thread to the kebab shop owner. Let's see if you'll ever have a kebab in Aber again

I know that more than one country has mandatory military service-- Korea and Lebanon both do. Does anyone know any more?

I think the sentence, "I want to live here," is a legitimate reason for immigration, so maybe I'm biased, but I definitely think forced military service is a damn good reason to emigrate.

I do as well. I sure as hell wouldn't accept conscription, unless there was a serious war from a serious threat.

Where do you live man? In orbit or sth?

Most countries in the world have mandatory military service. Most EU countries do f.e. Israel (and I don't know who else) even has mandatory military service for women.

And of course my country does. It once was 18-21 months, but now it's down to 14 months, soon to be 12.

                              The brave resist military service.

                              The weak comply.

Fortunately there is no shortage of weaklings.

I'd cut her some slack and just answer the question that was based on curiosity. Over the course of its history, the U.S. has rarely had conscription and none during my lifetime, so no "orbit" need be involved.

Edit: btw, I agree that in many cases this is properly considered under the rubrick of political asylum. I have a christian friend from a muslim country who knew that because of his religion, conscription meant a high likelihood of death fighting in the front lines against christians on the other side. He was granted asylum.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
