Good question. I don't know the answer. I'd say that the increasing gap between rich and poor had something to do with it.

The thing is, crime in the UK is concentrated in certain area's .. there are still area's where people go out and leave the door unlocked (as in Scotland/Wales and rural England) ...

Crime is bad in certain area's for many reasons .. The increasing difference between rich and poor is one, the current education system which forces people to goto bad/failing schools because of your locality.. meaning rich kids goto school with rich kids, and poor with poor. The lack of semi-skilled jobs .. there are plenty of low/no skilled jobs, but very few which force those caught in the poverty trap to want to do anything about it.

Population size is also a factor, nearly 8 million people live within 30sq miles of London !!! some of these people have difficulties due to inability to speak English (due to immigration).

Most of all, you have to look at how crime rate is recorded..

Does the UK have the highest crime rate because it has the best police + detection ???? maybe/maybe not .. but it is imposible to compare like with like, when undetected crime simple is not known about.

Finally, as a person who actually loves Greece very much, I will have to say that your country just isn't in the same league as the UK, economically & politically .. however, you have a wonderful pace of life, make lovely food, and your woman win hands down .. (personal taste of course) ..

serious mode for JUST a little bit.

the crime rate has been recorded as the number of (qualified as) attacks (common qualification) against 100.000 civilians. the UK has the highest number of attacks Greece has the lowest.

economically and politically are very abstract terms...

By talking only about the pace of life, the beauty of greek women (something that is as nephelic as the economic and political terms - beautiful women exist all over the world IMO) and the greek cuisine I think you are underestimating Greece.

About immigration Greece has one of the highest % in the EU but no racial incidents compared to the UK or some other countries of the EU.

I also not only like but also look to the UK as example for several matters. But I have to say that these matters become less and less compared to other countries these last years .

for example our medical system is better than yours despite you having a better GDP. Crime is lower... our mass transportation is far safer and cheaper...one by one the things I looked at britain as "teaching" to us are either eclisped or are better done by ther european countries.

but i dont think anyone around here will forget Lord Byron ever (well those who study some of course )

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Not all crimes are reported. There may be many Greek citizens who are victimes of crime but do not/cannot tell the police for whatever reason.

Plus, isn't Greece more rural? I'd be suprised in the crime rate wasn't lower.

Crime stats are often woefully innaccurate. A crime survey (I don't remember the link but we did it in sociology) ranked Australia as having on of the hghest crime rates, whilst the US had one of the lowest.

And crime is only one apsect of a country. Even if a country does have a higher crime rate it doesn't mean it's any less pleasant to live in (Nazi Germany had lower crime rates you know...)
