The brits occupied Ireland for 700 years, controlling what the population read, said and saw. Guess what? There were still constant bloody rebellions. The only way for them to stop the shooting was to pull out/get kicked out in 1921(?) and then ensure equality of citizens as parts of a civil society in the demographically divided 6 Counties. The longer Israel stays, the worse it'll be when they pull out once and for all. The only other option is to literally push the Palestinians out, which would make Sharon et al exactly one step removed from the more bloodthirsty ethnic cleansers of the past century.
Very good point KH. Compare and contrast the way the Brits treated the Irish with the way the Romans treated virtually everyone in their empire. Sure there were rebellions against Roman rule - witness the extinction of both the Carthage and ancient Israel, - but on the whole the conquered people learned latin and because Roman citizens. Emperors were elected from all provinces -- and it made no difference if the emperor was of Roman descent. Even after Rome fell, the Eastern Empire did not suddenly revolt and become Greek or Syrian or Egyptian again. They considered themselves Roman and proud of it.
But England, contrast, never treated a conquered people such as the Irish as equals. It had a lot to do with the fact that the Irish were Catholic and the English King was the head of a hostile religion. But the Irish never felt themselves to be part of one country with the British.
Israel could in fact, in my view, take over and absorb the Palestinians into the state of Israel if it behaved more like the Romans and less like the Brits. However, this would require that Israel really become a non secular state with no preferences for Jew over Arab. Otherwise, just like KH said, in the end you will have a hostile Arab population ad infinitum.
(ancient) Israel has actually usually absorbed other people into it's midst. Not everyone, and there were some sworn enemies (midyan and some) but most were absorbed.
I'm against this radical separatism.
I'd actually like to slowly absorb the Israeli - Arabs into the Jewish nation.
