AOL has actually been proven to be a reliable, if slightly expensive, ISP for people that don't have cable or DSL available where they live
I suggest you talk to faded glory about that one...

And I've also tried AOL, and by the end of it, I was limited to 15 minutes of online time at 28kbps before being disconnected, and then having to restart my PC before I could reconnect. AOL would be more reliable if they replaced their entire staff with monkeys.

I'm pretty sure they've already tried that.

I use 56k, and I took me 6+ hours to download a half life patch. I had no problem getting the patch, and I have no problems playing half life. I just can't use the rocket launcher or grenades. It's still fun without them. But thats my 56k, not AOL. It has been a very reliable service to me. Plus, all my friends are on AOL! It's just convenient and easy to use.

it would take a million monkeys quite a while to get a coherent AOL ad, so its unlikely.

Nope, actually all of my friends do use AOL. Because all of their friends use AOL. And it goes on.

AOL got on top by being the best ISP early on. After getting a ton of subscibers, it could get away with an occasional mistake. But not nearly as much as some other ISPs do.

In fact, I am moving twice as fast on the internet, and I get 1/3 as many disconnects since switching to AOL. My old ISP was Netzero and I now see why everyone loves AOL.

                  Like why everyone loves Microsoft.

Since switching from AOL, I get 1/1000 as many unscheduled disconnects.

You must have a faulty modem. They recommend you restart your comp after you lose your connection. If you take good care of it, it won't fail on you.

It was the 72 meg patch. I had to get it from this ghetto German web site

It took much longer than it should have taken...

My arse. My modem's fine with every other ISP I have ever used. If by "they" you mean AOL, yeah, they recommend that because of the memory-intensive way in which the sofware connects you. Its overkill. I've been on and offline 6 times today already without restarting once.

72 megs in 6 hours? Thats pretty good.

I use Verison.net. I'm online for hours at a time, and it never disconnects if the line (56K) is being used (that is, if I get up now and leave the computer alone for the next twenty minutes, I migtht be disconnected, but never, say, during a download).

I've played sixteen-hour sessions of Diablo II online without a single disconnect.

Not getting on in the first place simply does not happen.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Thats right. 72 megs in 6 hours. AOL might be a little less stable, but it has a real speed advantage in many cases. And when you lose your connection, it usually is your modem. It's probably because I still use 6.0, but I'm too lazy to change
